Kazem slumped against a tree. Out of sight from anyone else thanks to the sweet solitude granted by a forest, he had his face covered with both hands. He could sense nothing but the dirty texture of his leather gloves as something deep within his core festered like an open wound. Like so many times before, conflicting feelings swirling inside his heart gave way to the far more familiar and comforting sensations of anger and apathy before everything went numb.
Eventually, Kazem rose to his feet. Something ignited inside his emerald eyes.
“This changes nothing.” he said to himself, clenching his teeth. “Absolutely nothing.”
And so the thief resumed his trek toward the town with a huff, setting his personal feelings aside…
For he was a professional.
A diverging path soon replaced the surrounding woodlands. The roads ranged anywhere from Riverside itself, settlements many miles away, and the nearby watchtower. Kazem sighed upon spotting some guards around the area. His usual persona took over from there, grumbling and muttering to himself as he made his way to the soldiers.
“Better have found my horse…”
Without warning, the ground trembled. A colossal feline figure emerged from over the hill, and only the large watchtower rivaled his natural stature. Exotic armor composed of a sculpted and crystalline material concealed the mergich’s physical form, but a helmet carved like a mask to resemble a roaring tiger made him all the more menacing.
Kazem’s heart skipped a beat. Although the local guards reacted immediately, their pikes and ranged weapons were practically needles and peashooters in comparison to the mergich warrior. Several steel bolts and lead bullets soon collided with the mergich’s bizarre armor, either ricocheting or chipping the crystal material like ice. The mergich emitted a low growl in return, raising his massive mace in the air. His decision to simply linger it above the humans like his own personal sword of Damocles was enough to make some soldiers break formation and run away, quickly leading to a full-fledged retreat from the remaining ones.
Pure pandemonium consumed Riverside’s outskirts. Many made a mad dash for the main gate, where civilians and soldiers alike shouted or screamed in a chorus of chaos. A collective cry erupted from the forming crowd as the mergich swung their mace at the watchtower, disintegrating a central segment like a sandcastle before the upper half toppled over.
As for Kazem, raw instinct took over. After looking at the people clogging the gates and swarms of infantry by the walls, he ran back the way he came. Only the faint sound of siege weapons firing from several other great towers gave him any idea of what was going on as he vanished into the forest without further delay.
Ironically enough, the mergich relented in his assault immediately afterward. He backed away with his shield raised, descending down the hill and deflecting an outright boulder lobbed his way.
~~~~~
A smoldering pile of ashes greeted Kazem back at the campsite. He took a moment to catch his breath, huffing and puffing, then he leaned over to put his hands on his knees.
As before, Farishta was nowhere in sight. Only her scattered possessions remained around the vicinity of the fire pit. This included her robes and other garments folded into a tidy pile.
“FARISHTA!” shouted Kazem, looking left to right. “Great. And here I am thinking you wouldn’t be hard to find…”
Sounds similar to water splashing erupted from the adjacent river. Kazem quickly pinpointed and directed himself toward the source of the noise by entering a small forest clearing. There, he found Farishta standing below a large waterfall barely reaching the top of her head, where the river’s water level remained around her knees. She utilized the entire thing much like a showerhead. Water surged down her back, causing Farishta to arch it while lifting her tail, providing Kazem with a more intimate view of her nude and curvy body.
Farishta then looked over her shoulder, smirking upon seeing the much smaller man on the ground below her. “Oh… hey Kazem!” she said, holding up a hand to wave while wiggling her fingers. “Did you run all your errands in Riverside already?”
Blood flushed his cheeks before he looked away. “No, no, I… ugh. I didn’t mean to walk in on you like this!”
“Oh, it’s fine!” she said, fluttering her eyes. “We’re both adults here.”
His eyes averted her body nonetheless. “For your own sake, I hope it’s not normal for mergich to waltz around nude.”
She scoffed. “I’m not technically naked!” Farishta then pivoted toward the riverbank and clutched her prized ouroboros amulet. “I’m still wearing all my jewelry!”
He gave her a blank stare. "Whatever.”
“My fur also covers my more private bits, so it’s not really a big deal!” she said, making a pose with a hand on her hip. Each movement she made further reverberated the water, causing some to splash along the riverbank like waves in an ocean. “If anything else, this is way more comfortable! I don’t see why humans make such a big deal about not wearing any clothes to begin with!”
Kazem finally relented and looked up at Farishta. Despite her being soaked from head to toe with puffy fur shrinking against her body, she still maintained a graceful stature and demeanor. “Why are you like this?” he said, shaking his head. “We don’t have time for this kind of crap anyway. Bad timing to say the least…”
Farishta leaned against the riverbank with her ears perking up. “Oh. So there’s a reason why you came back already?”
“Yeah.” he said, nodding. “I was going to the watchtower to see if the idiots finally found my horse, then another mergich came out of nowhere and demolished the entire damn thing!”
“Oh my!” she said, almost gasping and covering her mouth with one hand.
“I ran back here as fast as I could…” continued Kazem. “I don't know if it's the mergich monster hunter the guards mentioned earlier or what, but now might be a good time to get out of here.”
“Is this… other mergich… still attacking Riverside?” asked Farishta, frowning.
He shrugged. “Don’t know. Either way, I don’t want you to get blamed for anything again, and this monster hunter could be a problem. Ideally we find a way to discreetly grab your new shoes and leave, which is a shame since I wanted to tie up any loose ends.”
Farishta took a single step out from the river, resulting in her fur dripping with an abundance of water like rainfall. “I’ll go talk to them then! This cannot be allowed if they’re attacking innocent humans unprovoked! It’s a direct violation of the divine codes and conduct all proper mergich are supposed to follow!”
Kazem took several steps back as Farishta fully emerged from the river. “Seriously?” he said, rubbing his eyes. “This again?”
Soft grass cushioned Farishta’s soggy toes once she left the water behind, flicking her tail. She then put her hands on her hips. “Well, I’m not going to stand idly by while innocent people get hurt for seemingly no reason. Especially if one of my kind is responsible!”
“I thought you learned your lesson after the kobold incident.” Kazem said, stepping even further back as Farishta towered over him. “I’d strongly suggest following my advice this time by not getting yourself involved in other people’s crap. From what I’ve gathered, the local baron didn’t pay the mergich monster hunter for slaying a hydra, so now he’s pissed off.”
She shook herself almost like a dog or a cat, flinging water drops in all directions. “You’re not always right, Kazem. You thought the shoemaker would laugh you out of his workshop, but he was more than happy to do a custom commission for me!”
He grunted before wiping subsequent water droplets from his face. “This is different.”
“How so?” asked Farishta, running her clawed hands through her frizzled fur. “I know you probably learned how to stay out of trouble based on what you told me about your upbringing, but I’m not like that. I’m not going to run away from every problem I come across. Maybe you’re right about these situations sometimes, but I can potentially stop something terrible from happening since one of my own people is involved!”
“Damn it.” Kazem said, crossing his arms. “I should have known you would have reacted like this.”
She crouched to the ground, tilting her head upwards. “Evil only succeeds when good people do nothing, Kazem.”
He scoffed. “It’s hard to take you seriously when you’re currently naked and soaking wet like a house cat.”
“Well, it’s a serious situation!” she replied, placing a hand on her heart. “I wouldn’t have taken a dip in the river if I knew you were going to immediately return to tell me there’s an emergency unfolding!”
“You better not be blaming me for getting your big, fluffy butt wet.” Kazem said in a deadpan tone.
She sighed with her tail slumping downward. “That’s not what I meant to imply…”
“I know.” he said, glancing to the side and smirking. “Regardless, if I can’t convince you this is a dumb idea, I can at least accompany you to try and make sure you don’t get yourself hurt.”
Farishta started the process of putting her various garments back on, starting with her footwraps. “Sure! I’d appreciate any assistance if the guards get confused or something!”
Kazem faced their improvised camp. “Just be warned that Riverside has a ton of fortifications and siege weapons. I’d suggest keeping our distance and approaching the watchtower from an angle… or at least whatever remains of it.”
Her amethyst eyes went wide. “Do you think they would shoot me?”
“I’d rather not find out.” he answered, walking away. “I’m gonna go get my things and stomp out any embers from the fire. Come pick me up once you’re done getting yourself dressed.”
“Will do!” she said, wrapping black fabric around her wrists.
Farishta put on each article of clothing one at a time. A quick tug on her footwraps combined with flexing her toes made sure they were nice and snug. Sliding her sizable tail through a large hole allowed her to wear slightly baggy pants, which were similarly tightened by black wraps. Robes soon covered her torso as she put them on like a jacket, and the insulated interior absorbed any remaining water within her plentiful and damp fur. Finally, Farishta covered her head with her remaining black wraps, creating something similar to a balaclava or a burqa with only her circular ears poking out and her amethyst eyes revealed.
A few paces on Farishta’s part put her back within the campsite’s proximity. True to his word, Kazem himself spent his time snuffing out whatever remained of the fire as ash and embers compacted beneath his leather boots.
Farishta kneeled to the ground again. “Are you ready?”
He stepped away from the firepit and rolled his shoulders. “As ready as I’ll ever be if you plan on charging into this nonsense.”
She lowered a hand to the ground like so many times before. “I might sprint over there, actually!”
“I… didn’t mean for that to be literal.” replied Kazem, stepping onto her padded palm.
“Just hold on tight to my thumb and you’ll be fine!” Farishta said before she raised him into the air.
His eyes went wide. “Oh shit.”
Grabbing her staff with one hand, Farishta curled her fingers around Kazem with the other. “I’ll do my best to be careful carrying you while I run, but this is an emergency after all!”
“Is this safe?” he asked, blinking a few times. “Or like… you’ve done this when hauling a human around before, right?”
“Not really, but I’m sure you’ll be fine!” she said with a toothy grin. “My apologies if this is uncomfortable, but I assure you that you won’t come to any harm if I can help it!”
From there, Farishta’s fingers interlocked around Kazem’s limbs. He practically hugged her clawed thumb with a free arm with little time to think. In a matter of moments, Farishta fully clutched Kazem before breaking out into a full-fledged sprint, rapidly leaving the campsite behind while Kazem’s skin went almost completely pale.
Even if Farishta finds and defeats said rampaging Mergich , what is she exactly going to do next? The townsfolk will probably demand its death for the destruction and death it has probably caused however Farishta's pacifistic nature might be opposed to this . It will be interesting to see how the story develops next . Also thank you for this bit ;p
The humans should consider using biological warfare against these giants. If you smother a arrow in feces and shoot them an infection could take hold and kill them. Kill them many days later of course but the threat of it might make them steer clear of you in the first place. Though this only works if human germs can kill them.
Others probably have the same question, but I can't say for certain. I've been finding it difficult to actually sit down and write over the last few months. I might just have to drop other stuff I'm working on to focus all efforts on this series since weekly updates would be preferable to spreading myself out between multiple projects.
Read this chapter that I've been waiting for so long 3 months after its publication.. I'm sorry, but it makes me really happy to have read it tonight.
I don't know if you remember, but I really like the cute and intimate scenes between Farishta and Kazem, and seeing this scene where Kazem sees his naked leopard under a waterfall, it really warmed my heart, hoping to see something deeper in the future ^^
I wish you the best and above all take all the time you need for the next chapter, I know you're struggling right now. 🦊
Yeah, Kazem should have known she would react this way. Maybe a part of him, deep down, wanted to try and make up for how he acted in the dream by getting help for the town.
And, even though he still doesn't have a horse, at least he still has a mighty steed to ride into battle.
