You know, I have an internet friend that had something like that a few years back. She liked me, I probably didn't catch on at first but I started getting suspicious at some point and I was suspicious for a while but I didn't want to ask because if I was right I'd have to tell her I didn't feel the same... eventually after a conversation that had both of us trying not to incriminate ourselves (there was a lot of stuff like 'if I was the guy I'd still be your friend if you told me' and whatnot) she told me and we talked about stuff for a bit (I felt like a total ass for a while, believe me) and it was awkward for a little while but things went back to normal after a few days. I'd like to say they still are, but I did something to piss her off and she's like not even talking to me right now (don't even know what I did, crazy woman...) but that's kinda irrelevant. The point is I think you should go for it. Either way, nothing bad will come of it. If he's a cool guy he'll be cool, and good things will happen, nice words and apologies will be said and things might be a bit awkward for a while but they'll probably go back easily enough. I don't think the whole 'ruining the friendship' thing actually happens in real life. Plus it'll get it out of the way and everything, having that bit of tension sucks.
'Least, that's what I think.
