An old Bug Fables OC circa 2020. I have a bad habit of designing characters and never sharing them anywhere. I actually have quite a few more characters I've never uploaded for whatever reason, but this is my only Bug Fables one.
Meet Vern the grasshopper! He is the owner of a crumbling, financial failure of a theater, but he is willing to do anything to keep his artistic vision alive. His passion borders on obsession: selfish and desperate, he’s turned to theft and deceit to prop up his vision. Yet his cowardice makes him almost comically pitiful, fooling only the most naïve of bugs. Deep down, Vern doesn’t want to be the villain—he’s simply trapped by his own blind ambition. No matter what it takes, one day his amazing original production will touch the hearts of millions at his theater!
Here's his backstory if that interests you:
Grasshoppers remain among the “lesser bugs" (such as species like midges and inichas) that never fully evolved into the “greater bugs” (such as bees and ants). This stagnation stems from the crystal’s weak influence in regions where grasshoppers traditionally lived. Vern, however, was born in a tiny village perched just within the crystal’s faint reach.
In his homeland, debates rage endlessly over what decides whether a young grasshopper becomes greater or lesser, unaware that the crystal’s distant power is the key. Vern has his own theory: he believes his passion for the arts elevated him, that his devotion to creativity spared him from devolving into a mindless beast like his siblings. His family, unimpressed, saw his playwriting as foolishness. They urged him to abandon his dreams and focus on raising the next generation of the village. But Vern was unshakably stubborn.
Determined to prove them wrong, he left home — one of the rare grasshoppers to evolve into a greater bug — and ever since, his strange refinement has baffled every bug he meets.
