Tazo of Shieldpoint is the daughter of candle-makers, one a former river pirate. Interested in magic more than ordinary craftsmanship, she began training with her magic-using mother and the village's geomancer. She might have become a respectable wizard, if not for her brother.

Just before his sixteenth birthday, Vonn's desire for tinkering and invention led him to invent a new kind of stove, which caused him to discover the concept of carbon monoxide. But he miraculously revived, and woke up with bizarre visions of another world full of technology. That's not really quite what happened, but only a few people learned the whole truth. In any case, Vonn had become even more wildly ambitious, coupled with inherited knowledge like nothing she'd seen before.

So Tazo wouldn't become a respectable wizard. She'd become a famous archmage, and the second most important engineer in the world.

Her brother didn't just invent cutting-edge technology; he invented the phrase itself. So, sometimes, his projects don't immediately work out. Some days she wishes he'd stuck to that early invention of his called "pinball".
