Well, since I've seen a few artists come up with this idea as a drawing, I thought I would try to make it a reality as a sweet bread/dessert...gads, do I suck at making bread bunnies XD
Rated ADULT for the use of alcohol, though with this recipe I used 2 fillings that had used a bit of it, and 1 filling that didn't for those that want to stay alcohol free :3
Taken from "Re" on All Recipes.com, her "Best Ever Cinnamon Buns"...with my take :P
Ingredients:
2 (.25 ounce) packages dry yeast
2 1/2 cups warm water
1 package yellow cake mix
6 cups all purpose flour, divided
3 eggs
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 cup butter, softened
4 tablespoons white sugar
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon (I used apple pie spice)
1/4 cup butter, melted
3 cups confectioner's sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2/3 cup milk*
Fillings:
1/2 of a jar of apricot preserves, as is (you can also use the no sugar added kind too)
1/2 jar of sweet orange marmalade (mixed with whatever was left of the apricot preserves) + splashes of Cointreau
...also, I splashed some on the buns themselves, we'll see how that goes :P
Approx. 1 cup applesauce (I had the "self-serve" bowls, I used 2, which I think is about that...I think :P)
1 cup walnuts (just put them in a Ziploc and break them up while sealed, it saves on clean up)
1/2 cup raisins
1/3 cup of the Captain...you know which Captain Im talkin' about ;)
1 teaspoon apple pie spice (or just cinnamon)
Directions:
1.) In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and let stand for 3 minutes.
Add cake mix, 1 cup flour to start it off, eggs, oil and salt; beat well. Then just add 1 cup at a time until it forms a dough (just make sure you don't lose count, or put it in all at once- that just leads into one BIG mess XD)
2.) Knead on well-floured surface for about 5 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, and turn to coat the dough surface. Let rise until doubled in bulk, about 45 minutes.
3.) Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees Celsius)
4.) Punch the dough down, and divide into two equal parts. (and folks, this is enough to get onto 2 baking pans, so make sure you have them sprayed and ready!) Roll out each section on a lightly floured surface and spread each with softened butter and sprinkle with butter and cinnamon...
I just used my own fillings, and these rolls are versatile enough that you can put any kind of filling in...just sayin' !
5.) Roll-up like jelly rolls and cut buns 1 1/2 inches thick either using dental floss (preferably not used already :P) or with a dull knife. Place in greased baking pans, and allow to rise until doubled.
6.) Bake at 350 degrees, for about 25 to 35 minutes (I would say the 35, because of the fillings involved) or until golden brown.
7.) Then just get a small cooking pot, and combine 1/4 cup melted butter, confectioners sugar, vanilla and milk. Now...you'll note the asterisk on the milk...quite honestly, the milk made this more of a glaze, than a frosting.
With that said, if you're going to add milk, add it slowly, otherwise you'll just lose the thickness. (and if you're lactose intolerant, just don't add it in at all- much like my banana foster bread glaze, you can just add in the 1/3 cup booze instead:P)
~ Upon further thought, get a small separate bowl and mix 1/2 cup sugar with 1/2 cup apple pie spice, and mix together well. This can be the 'cinnamon sugar' you can just sprinkle on them PRIOR to baking...I'd say this would give it a nice outer crust if I ever baked this again, along with glazing the tops with butter every once in a while.
Let them cool on the rack, and...
Enjoy :)

Just a quick note for those who aren't familiar with brands of alcohol 'Captain' is 'Captain Morgan Rum'.
