The thread of logic I'm seeing branches, involves either forming a separate physicality around one's astral body, or directly superimposing that body over one's physical body and manifesting the astral form in the physical. The latter apparently depends a fair bit on physical conditioning. Or it's hereditary or the product of external possession, which is how you get the trope of the 'involuntary' zoanthrope.

Basically what this implies is that, if a zoanthrope existed, they would achieve their changes through practicing moving matter back and forth in an external envelope of fifth dimensional space. In theory, of course. Meaning, extraplanar shamanic hijinx is probably required, Doctor Strange style.
