Singlestick & Horse from Sir Edwin Dunfrees
The date on this (as it takes the form of a letter) is accurate. Sir Edwin is the first serious novel I wrote all the way through. It is historical novel based upon the times of WWI, though it did not begin that way. The book began as an article on fencing, and 'The Grand Salute'. This was where I first met Sir Edwin, and he simply took over. He became a very close friend, though he was 105 years old at the time of the writing.
During this time, I found myself connected somehow to the times of which I was writing about. During the writing, I found myself knowing and (more importantly) understanding things I had no right to know.
I have now, finally, returned to the novel for a final edit prior to my banging my head against the wall once again trying to get something published. This particular piece still causes me to smile.
George Patton, I will add here, was a Master of the Sword. He was cavalry all the way, and actually convinced the American Cavalry to change sword designs.
enjoy...
