Oh-My-God.
Okay. I´m sorry, I cant stop laughing, this is simply way to adorable.
so...It turns out that even though we tried to find a place to touch down and set up that disrupts as little fauna and flora as possible, we might have become a local attraction of some sort.
I got woken up by Captain Kaneko this morning, sounding a little unsure about what to make of a peculiar situation. what she showed me was truly adorable. a whole herd of Garden Deels had discovered our airship and research station and formed what can only be described as a greeting committee.
as in, most of the herd was hiding in the high grass bordering our camp, and 2 or three bolder individuals stepped out and approached us carefully. Captain Kaneko was not entirely sure if these animals are safe or would post an issue, so she asked for our opinion. I was able to calm her worries and
not half an hour later these little guys have ´infiltrated´ our camp, and Captain Kaneko is over the moon in love with them. so far I have only really seen her business side as a stern but fair captain, but having this woman aw and coo and sit on the ground for half an hour to let these curious critters almost climb over her
was admittedly one of the sweetest things I have seen in a long time. Now we of course instructed the crew to not interact toooo much with them as they are wildlife and should remain undisturbed, however I could not bring myself to be too harsh about it. Neil has asked me for the 10th time now what would be okay to feed them and if he really reeeeeally cannot keep all of them . the answer remains no. so...yeah looks like we have some temporary crew members now.
As for the creatures themselves.
Garden deel are a small (2 feet tall) Deel species that live around Marshlands and forests. They mostly scamper arround ín high grass or tall shrubbery where they can remain unseen. They also often stay in one spot as a herd, only poking their heads above the grass to check the situation before ducking down again. They eat mostly small slow moving insects and nightcrawlers. They are known to be quite friendy to humans and other Humanoids, or at least curious. This also gave them their name, because they have taken over suburban gardenns before as long as they where close to their territories and had enough hiding spots. They get the required moisture for their skin from morning dew and rain, though they can also swim if they need to. Most notably is their behavior if they feel threatened. They live on loose but moist soil, and can, very remarkibly, dig into the ground at impressive speeds. so to escape, they at times dig themselves in, and wait for the danger to pass on. They are Diurnal, and during the night the whole herd, which can count up to 20 individuals. digs a few communal nests, where they curl up together, taking shifts to keep watch for danger.
