Wow, where do I even start with this one...
Well originally it was supposed to be a sketchy art trade with my friend Kenzi of her lactera character (does he have a name?). We had agreed on it a few months ago, it was just gonna be a quick little doodle type of thing. But as I was drawing it, a lot of my own feelings were projected onto the piece. It's not just an art trade anymore, it's also a really personal work for me now.
I can honestly say that is is the best illustration I've ever done. It stands out from my other work a lot, because with this one I forced myself to slow down. In most of my current works, I've rushed through the process because I just wanted to finish the piece. But art isn't about the finished piece, it's about the journey you take to get there. I had forgotten that, and so my latest works have felt lifeless to me.
I don't think I consciously decided that it was going to be THIS piece that made the breakthrough. It just happened. I was listening to Explosions in the Sky (the title of this is one of their song names- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkclIDu9K5c ), as well as some songs a high school classmate of mine wrote (http://www.myspace.com/lettertoamirror and http://andrewdavidmusic.bandcamp.com/) and I became really inspired. When I was drawing I felt like I was meditating almost. Time would pass without me noticing, and I really felt connected to the work...it's been a long time since I felt this way about anything I've created.
Besides the great music, I also have to thank my friend Maya once again for teaching me about color theory last year. Without her advice I would never have been able to render those clouds! And also thanks to my friend Rob for showing me how to shade the humanesk anatomy.
I honestly can't believe that this project is finished. It's been hanging out on my desktop for like 4 months now XD But I can't find anything else I really want to add. Some things I'm not totally happy with, like the moon. But I've put my all into this piece- what you are seeing is the physical representation of what I can do at this point in my life, as well as my emotions and inspiration.
I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I enjoyed doing it.
Oh and happy birthday Kenzi XDDDD Sometimes when I was working on this picture I forgot that it was supposed to be for you ahahahaa. You rock tho man, thanks for all the rad art you've given me over the years, I still cherish everything you've sent me.
