In this setting there IS a sort of Divine Right of Kings as well, but it only applies to Evrics, who are heavily controlled by their god. If Acrados finds that one of the Vandens is not fit to rule, he takes the powers away and they are no longer considered a Vanden by blood, even if they're the next in line.
There's always some Vanden from here or there who will inherit who is morally sound! The family is quite huge, brothers, sisters, niblings, uncles, there's always someone. In a pinch, if the next in line has no heir then they can "convert" someone into a Vanden via a ritual!
It would actually! It's quite a painful ritual to go through so those who go through it have to make sure that they're ok with that and that they WANT to become a Vanden. Usually the person becoming a Vanden is very close to the Vanden who conducts the ritual.
