I heard the news of the shooting just before I turned in for the night. At the time it said he'd been taken to hospital.

I was very saddened when I awoke a short time ago and found that he'd passed away. A good man who didn't deserve to have his life cut short.

It sounds like he had a heart attack after being shot, they gave him 100+ units of blood at the hopsital, but the blood loss was too severe to stop.

The perpetrator didn't even attempt to run away.

Another domino of the chaos to come.

I heard about him being shot way earlier this morning around 4 am. At the time I thought he survived. when I woke up around noon i saw he had died. It was a tragedy and a sad end for him

Shocked when I heard this news. Condolences to his family and friends for their terrible loss. Hope the killer meets a similar fate.

The Japanese have a pretty straight forward process for dealing with these types of cases. And unlike the US where it can take decades, the court process typically runs about 5-7 years until sentence is carried out. Also, unlike the US they're not concerned about hanging being "cruel/unusual" or needing a "humane/merciful" death for the condemned. If the convicted criminal were so concerned about that fate, they shouldn't have committed the crime.

Forget the noose. Sharpen the sword; One quick "swish" and it's over and done.

Unfortunately, while a good samurai sword would be appropriate, the gallows is required.

I feel the same way. Generally, the Japanese people are too pacifistic to use guns. A public shooting like this is very rare. I wonder what radicalized the gunman to do this.

With Abe having moved attentions toward restoring Japan's military it would not surprise me if China and N.Korea did want him dead. It won't take long for Japan to figure out they need to step things up. Japan may have their own "Abraham Lincoln" on their hands and China and N.Korea have a martyr they can not silence.

He most certainly did not. I was always under the impression he was a good man, at least as far as politicians go, though in hindsight I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. Being a good man in politics makes more enemies.

I stayed up the whole night keeping an eye on news from NHK and any other sources I could find.

Several spectator videos show the shooting clear as day, and it's astonishing to me that security could be this awful around the poor man (not to mention how slow they all were to react). The assassin's first shot that was aimed at Abe's back either misfired or simply hit nothing, but apparently no one realized there was a shooter (despite the fact he was standing right there) and everyone just stood in place. Abe turned toward the noise, which unfortunately led to him being immediately shot in the chest by the second round just after 11:30AM Japan time.

At the hospital press conference (6PM Japan time), the doctor said Abe had a "gaping hole" in his heart.

Abe never had a chance. He effectively died within moments right on the street and had no vital signs at that point in time. 5+ hours with no vitals before they finally pronounced him dead at 5:03PM at the hospital.

I was pretty disturbed by this. It might just be some whacko, but I don't favor randomness and it would not surprise me at all if foreign actors were involved. I fear that worse is coming and it's going to impact all of us.
