Character Short: “Genji”

(The scene starts with fading in on the view of the Vale Cybernetic Industries building, which resides in the middle of the city; located between the residential, commercial and industrial district. It then shows the different floors of the famous company: the lobby, the office center, the medical center, the science center and the testing room. But the most important room that the scene shows is the Cybernetic Military Training Room, located in the bottom floors of the facility and below the Cybernetic building)

(Soldiers of different ages, genders, body types and does who went into the cybernetic program (in which they become haft cyborgs) are training for their next mission. The train in marksmanship, in close quarters combats, in time trials and in virtual simulations. The scene later changes to someone looking down at the training room, in which a young Osamu Genji is looking on from the breakroom balcony. He sees his unit, The Eagle Strike Coalition Force, training in the combat room against the best of the cybernetic military; one of the members being his best friend Riley. Leaning in from the metal rails he slimes at his brothers in arms, until his attention was directed by someone entering the room)

Cybernetic Soldier: Oh! (he salutes to Genji) Mr. Genji, sir!

Young Genji: At ease, soldier. You don’t need to be so formal in front of me.

Cybernetic Soldier: Of course, sir. Are you watching on? (proceeds to get close to him)

Young Genji: Yep. (turns back to look at the facility below) I just finish my training for today. Right now I’m just looking at my unit. (the soldier looks on next to Genji)

(The soldier looks on as he sees Genji’s leader, Lion Braveheart, taking on multiple people at once. Riley Yoshiro countering one soldier after the next and the rest of the unit doing their best in keeping their focus)

Cybernetic Soldier: Yep. They sure do.

Young Genji: But…

Cybernetic Soldier: (looks at Genji) But?

Young Genji: I haven’t see Spike Ogawa anywhere today. I thought I could find him training but his not here.

Cybernetic Soldier: You haven’t? Well I think I did see him.

Young Genji: (looks at the soldier) You do?

Cybernetic Soldier: Yeah. I did saw him a few hours ago.

Young Genji: And do you know where did he go?

Cybernetic Soldier: Hmm… (thinks for a moment) Well the last thing I see is that he was heading towards the roof.

Young Genji: (surprised) The roof?

(The scene cuts to the view of the sunset shining over the ocean waters, far away from the Cybernetic Building. The scene lowers to show Spike Ogawa sitting on the roof of the building, below Lucas Nineheart’s private office. It shows him drawing on a notepad, drawing at the sunset shining on the ocean waters. This is shown on his notepad as his drawing is something to admire to. In that moment, Genji appears through the secret scaffolding that leads to the top of the building)

Young Genji: (offscreen) I never knew that you be up here?

(Spike freaks out, almost dropping his pen and notepad before looking back to see Genji there)

Young Spike: Oh, Genji! I-I-I didn’t know you are coming.

Young Genji: Neither could I. (he began his approach) I was looking for you. I thought that you might be in the training room, but it seems you weren’t. (looks down at Spike) May I?

Young Spike: (realize that he wants to sit next to him) Oh, Yeah. Of course.

(Genji slowly lowers himself and sits next to him. Together they share a moment of silence as they look at the sunset and natures beauty. Afterwards, Genji looks at Spike’s notepad and sees the drawing of the sunset over water)

Young Genji: I didn’t know you could draw?

Young Spike: (notice him snooping on his notepad. He freaks out and hides his notepad) Ahh! You shouldn’t snoop someone’s belongings without my permission!

Young Genji: (he notices his mistake and calmly he ask) Well… may I?

(Spike thinks for a moment, but trusting his friend he leans him his notepad. Genji gets the notepad and looks at the drawing)

Young Genji: (amazed) Wow, Spike. I didn’t know that you draw so well.

Young Spike: Ohh shucks, Genji. (feels embarrassed) You don’t need to prays that much. (Once he looks back ne notice that Genji is looking at the other pages of his drawings) Hey!

Young Genji: Well hello? (looking at the other drawings) I didn’t realize that you’re that talented?

Young Spike: (grabs and takes away his notpad) For your information it is very rude that you look beyond that without my permission you know.

Young Genji: (realize his mistake) Ohh… I’m sorry. I was just curious.

Young Spike: Hmph! (looks back at Genji) Serves you right.

(The looked at each other for a moment, before the burst out laughing; knowing that there’s no need to be angry at each other. It transitions to them looking at the sunset together as they take in the moment. Afterwards Genji talks about Spike’s talent for drawing)

Young Genji: Since when you where such a talented artist?

Young Spike: Since I was very little. I like to draw a lot of thing that I want to preserve in paper. It always calms my nerves, like a therapy session.

Young Genji: Really?

Young Spike: (he breathes for a moment and looks back at the sunset) This world is beautiful.

Young Genji: It sure is. Even my dad respects the natural beauty of our planet, well… except for the Grimm of course.

Young Spike: I can agree to that.

Young Genji: (pounders for a bit) Hmm… I always wondered: how was Remnant look like in the distant past? Was it peaceful? Was it tranquil? Was it less death and more happiness? So many thing that I would have asked; but yet so far out of reach. *sigh* Maybe one day we might get does answers, (looks at Spike) right?

(He started to notice that Spike is looking a little bit down as he olds his hands. Maybe is something that he said or something is bothering him so he makes his move and asked him if he is ok)

Young Genji: Hey, Spike? Are you ok? What’s troubling you?

(Spike doesn’t respond to him at first, but with a quick breath he tells him)

Young Spike: Well… it’s… it’s about the White Fang. (Genji is surprised about this topic. He feels that he should tell that they been over this topic multiple times, but in this scenario, he let his friend gets everything out of his chest) Over the past couple of months, the White Fang have been causing so much trouble for our race. It’s making it so dang difficult for us to co-exist with the human (looks at Genji), their even insulting us for that (looks back down). We have the rights to be at the same level as them, but with their recent activities…

(Genji starts to feel bad for him as he, a Faunus, feels the same predicament; but detest the actions of the White Fang’s brutal methods)

Young Spike: One of our members had quit the team.

Young Genji: (shocked and steps into the conversation) What?! Since when?

Young Spike: Since yesterday. Weren’t you paying attention yesterday’s briefing?

Young Genji: Umm… no. I was on a mission yesterday helping some civilians escape from a horde of Grimm.

Young Spike: Oh yeah… (scratches the back of his head in embarrassment) forgot about that.

Young Genji: But why? Why would he quit the team?

Young Spike: Because he believes that where not getting any progress, that where not advancing the status of our race so we can be equals.

Young Genji: But he must know that it takes time for it to happen, but with the White Fang causing so much trouble—

Young Spike: I know that. But… still. (Genji began to understand his situation) Genji, I been meaning to ask you this (he looks at him before looking back down) and you’re the only one, besides Riley, that I can trust with what I have to say.

(He pauses for a moment before he looks back to Genji)

Young Spike: I been thinking some stuff lately and I don’t know what to do with it. With all that is happening I been giving some though about something that I’m not so sure if it would be the best course of action, so… (Genji looks on with curiosity) What do you think… (looks back at Genji) If I have joined the White Fang?

(The scene cuts to black before it fade into the rooftops of Menagerie, during the evening in the present day. The sun is setting and the birds are flying by. In that moment, Genji is seen running in the rooftops as he is chasing someone. He jumps from roof to roof as he is heading toward a location. In one of his jumps he uses a kunai infused with warp dust to teleport to a roof that is very far away. He warps to the other roof and picks up his kunai. The scene cuts back to the past with the continuation of Spike and Genji’s conversation. Genji is speechless as Spike asked if he had joined the White Fang)

Young Spike: Umm, Genji? I’m waiting for your response.

Young Genji: Umm… well… you see… the thing is… umm…

Young Spike: (he lifts an eyebrow) Hmmm?

Young Genji: (he struggles, but he gave up) *sigh* Spike, what do you want me to say? I can understand where you’re going with this but—

Young Spike: But what?

Young Genji: *sigh* If it was back then I could understand, but now—

Young Spike: I know that the White Fang of today are being a little aggressive. But there has to be some god in them, right? Not all of them are bad people, are they?

(It cuts back to the present day with Genji still in hot pursuit on the rooftops. As he continues his run he calls out to Yoyo Deelon through his earpiece)

Genji: Deelon, what’s your status?

Deelon: Still chasing the suspect, but I lost sight of him. Do you have a visual?

(Genji looks down at the streets below and sees the Faunus that he is chasing)

Genji: I have a visual. His running toward the market; will cut him off in the alleyway ahead.

Garnet: (appears running at the other side of the rooftops. Calling Genji through his earpiece) Don’t you worry, he won’t escape.

Genji: (briefly smiles) Noted.

(They continue their pursuit of the man before it cuts back to Spike and Genji in the past)

Young Genji: Well you got me there. To be honest with you… I’ve never seen a member that is a good person. But… I can understand.

Young Spike: (confused) Huh?

Young Genji: You want to do some good in the world, even if you do that good within the White Fang. You know that I hate their gust, that I hate their method and their new motivation. However, I do feel if there are some good in them (looks back at Spike) then they can make a difference.

Lucas: (offscreen) You said it.

(They heard a familiar voice as the look back to see their commanding officer and C.E.O of Vale Cybernetics, Lucas Nineheart. They freak out for a bit, straightens up from where they have seated and salute to their commanding officer)

Young Genji & Spike: (salute) Commander, sir!

Lucas: *giggles* At ease, you two. Also… why are you two standing on top of my roof?

Young Spike: Umm… well… you see—

Lucas: Don’t you worry, your secret is safe with me.

Young Spike: Ohh… (feels relived) Thank you.

Lucas: My pleasure. (walks towards them) Spike, you have a mentality that you want to make some good in this world. I can understand your struggle in being part of something bigger. This unit is design to symbolize the unification between our two races, to show that we can be together and help each other in times of need. (looks at Genji) May I remind you that your father, Satoshi, help me in many ways than one.

Young Genji: Yeah, I remember. My father helped you with others like you during the war.

Young Spike: (looks at Genji in shock) What!? Your father is one of the heroes of the Great War?!

(Lucas chuckles for a moment before looking at both of them)

Lucas: You two, both of you have great potential in doing great things for this world. But I can understand if you want to do much more outside of your unit. You have the choice to stay or leave; nothing is forcing you in making decisions for you on what to do with your life. But remember this: no matter the distance, no matter the situation, no matter the problems… you will always have each other’s back, till the very end.

(It cuts back to the present and the male Faunus is running away from his pursuers. He pushes away people so he can make a great escape. He sees the alleyway up ahead and takes his chance. He ends up at the other side and runs to his right, running down a large pathway in the residential district with now civilians in the area. He continues to run until Genji and Garnet jump off the roof, lands and readies their weapons)

Genji: (draws his bow) That’s far enough!

(The man stops as they have finally caught up to him. Deelon arrives on the scene has he stands next to Genji’s right side)

Deelon: Am I too late?

Genji: No, Deelon. You’re just in time. (The man looks on in fear has he knows he can’t escape them. Genji proceeds to command Deelon and Garnet) Deelon, your highness, bring him in.

Garnet: With pleasure.

Deelon: You go it.

(As they approach the man to take him in for questioning, Spike jump out from the rooftops and stands between him and the others. Genji looks on in surprised to see his former friend once more as more White Fang members arrive to assist. Everyone have a stare down at each other as they wait for who will make the first move. As Genji and Spike stare at each other it cuts back again to the past)

Lucas: (he looks at the time) Well what you look at the time. (he looks back at Genji and Spike) It’s getting late. You two should head down to your quarters and rest for today. I’ll notify Lance that I authorize you leave for today so you both get some rest, understood?

Young Genji and Spike: Yes, sir.

(Lucas nods and walks away. With him leaving the roof, Genji talks to Spike once more)

Young Genji: His right you know. We are the makers of our own destiny and we have our rights to make our own decision. Soo if you feel that you can make so much more outside of our unit—

Young Spike: I know, Genji. But… I feel that the time is not right for me to make that leap. (looks at Genji) For now… I’ll stick around for a little bit longer, until I make the correct decision.

Young Genji: That you will. (he places his arm behind Spike, avoiding his spiky hair) If you need any help? Riley and I will be here for you.

(With that he walks away. Spikes smiles for a moment before he looks down and picks up his notepad and his pencil. He looks at his recent drawing and thinks about what he said to Genji. After that he looks back at Genji and calls him out)

Young Spike: Genji!

(Genji stops and looks back)

Young Genji: Yes?

Young Spike: I… um…

Young Genji: *sigh* Don’t worry. About your question… if you would ever join the White Fang so you can do some good in the world? I will support you.

(The scene slowly transitions to the present in which Genji and Spike’s position where switch as they continue their stare down. Genji, fully aware that innocent people would get hurt if this escalates he lowers and and lets go of the energy string of his bow. Garnet and Deelon sees this and knows Genji’s decision. With that they also lower their weapons. Spike seeing this signals the man behind him to escape. The man flees as well as the other White Fang members. Spike looks back at Genji for one last time before leaving the scene. Frustrated, Genji looks down in disappointment as they let escape their suspect that would have given info about the White Fang)

(In that moment, Blake and Sun arrives at the scene)

Sun: Genji, we heard your call.

Blake: We came as fast as we could. Did you capture the suspect?

(When Genji hears of this, not wanting to tell Blake what happen, he turns around and walks away from the area and the group in frustration as he put his bow away on his back. Blake and Sun looks on in confusion)

Sun: Umm… Genji?

Blake: (looks back at Deelon and Princess Garnet) Deelon, Garnet, what happen here? (At first Deelon was about to tell her what happen, but Garnet interrupts him; knowing the true situation between Genji and Spike) Come on, say something. (Without saying a word they left the area and they head back to their private cottage) Still in confusion, Blake turns around and call out to Genji) Genji, what happen here! Genji!

(Blake continues to call out to him, but to no avail. Her voice began drowning out, making it so her voice is barely heard as Genji puts up his hood in shame. He puts his hand on the pockets of his coat was he continues walking away as the scene fades to black)
