arpad and I built it (well, he did most of the wood and I did a lot of the "decorating").
The nice background/wallpaper is fabric and is attached by velcro so we can remove it when it is inevitably peed upon.

We were using those mats that help things not slide on surfaces? But it turned out to be a bad idea actually and we recently switched over to a hi-gloss paint, which seems good so far! Just make sure you sand the shelves you're going to use first. <_<; If they have a layer on them already of some sort of finish or something.
