Wendell's parents, Mama & Tata Wolfe. They have a fairly large home in the Foreign Quarter of Absalom City
Mama Wolfe is a hulking, muscular natural lycanthrope who prefers to stay in her werewolf form at all times. She stands somewhere around 12 feet tall, and usually dresses in traditional Ustalavian clothes. When the Wolfes first moved to Absalom, the neighbors were terrified to hear about a werewolf prowling the district. Once the initial shock wore off, and people realized the werewolf was fully clothed and amply endowed, she became more of a curiosity. Mama Wolfe quickly gained a reputation for being the neighborhood mother, frequently showing up at neighbors' homes with gifts of food and clothing. She is loud and boisterous in a grandmotherly way, eagerly inviting friends and future-friends into her home to share food and overindulge in alcohol. Mama Wolfe makes a living by selling her home cooking right out of her home. Folks come from all over the city to get her authentic Ustalavian cuisine.
Tata Wolfe is a virisian hound who, despite being average height, looks like a child compared to his wife. He stands around 5' 8" and usually dresses in traditional Ustalavian clothes. Compared to his wife, Tata is quiet and soft-spoken. He is playful and likes to joke around, often about how much bigger his wife is and how ridiculous it is that a hunter married a werewolf. Tata enjoys gardening, and when he isn't tending to his own garden, he is often found caring for the other greenery around his neighborhood to bring some of the wild he loves into the city. As an experienced hunter, Tata occasionally teaches classes for prospective monster hunters.
The Red Scourge
Back in their homeland of Ustalav, Tata Wolfe was the best hunter in his small community. Most of the time this was hunting simple game like deer and boar to provide for the town, but when the warning bell was rung, Tata would grab his best axe to go monster hunting. He brought down many a beast in his day: The Monster Boar of Lasi, The Hag of Bocur Lake, The Hound-Faced Deer... But none of them vexed him quite like the Red Scourge.
A werewolf with brilliant red fur that terrorized the countryside, devouring entire flocks of sheep and devouring hogs by the drove. Many a hunter went after that monstrous beast and none ever returned. Naturally the people looked to Tata as the most capable of their folk. If he couldn't bring back the beast's head, no one could!
So Tata took his axe and went out into the misty wood. He laid a trap for the beast - a sheep with its leg cut, bleating out into the silence of the wood. Tata waited crouched in a tree nearby, ready to ambush it when it appeared. The cunning beast recognized his ambush and felled the tree he sat waiting in.
Tata landed roughly upon the forest floor. The Red Scourge stood twice Tata's height in the moonlit mist, and three times as wide, rippling with muscle. It loosed a terrible roar that Tata could feel in his bones. As the Scourge crouched to charge, Tata moved to recieve it.
The beast came quickly, bounding on all fours with murder in its eye. Tata rolled deftly to the side and lashed out with his axe, drawing a thin line of blood. The beast turned quickly, launching itself toward the hunter. Tata bolted toward the nearest tree. As he neared the tree, he could practically feel the Scourge's breath on his neck. At the last moment he slid to the side, hooking his axe around the trunk to sling himself behind it. The entire tree was partially uprooted from the sheer force of the impact, and the beast seemed stunned.
Tata knew the beast wouldn't fall for the trick a second time, and if it was strong enough to nearly knock down a tree, it could tear him in half with ease. He couldn't fight it directly, but he could tire it out. Turning the axe in his hand, Tata struck down hard at the back of the Scourge's head and immediately turned to run. The beast, even addled, was on his heels in moments.
Tata sprinted from cover to cover, narrowly ducking under clawswipes. Every other missed swipe tore into a tree or slammed into a stone, sapping precious energy from the rampaging beast. Tata could see the beast slowing, succumbing to exhaustion... But as he bolted for an ancient oak he suddenly felt hulking arms wrap around his chest. He turned to try to shove himself away from the beast, but his back slammed into the gnarled bark, knocking the wind out of him.
Tata was thrown roughly to the ground. He knew that he would likely be dead if the beast was at full strength, and if its sizeable chest hadn't cushioned the impact.
"Countless hunters have come for my head, and all of them have ended in my belly! What makes you think you'll be so different!?" The beast bellowed in perfect varisian, looming over him. Tata was surprised to hear the scourge speak, but even moreso to hear the femininity in its- her voice.
"I will defeat you because I must. Without our livestock my people will starve!" Tata stated with conviction as he picked himself up, wincing at the pain in his back.
"Then come and try, hunter!" She challenged, puffing out her chest and spreading her arms to recieve his attack. Tata took a breath and ran toward her, his axe dragging along the ground. At the last moment he swung upward, slinging dirt and twigs into her eyes and slid between her spread legs. She rubbed her eyes with one hand and clawed desperately around her feet with the other. Tata sucked through his teeth as he began to quickly scale the old oak.
He leapt at her from the branches, swinging his axe overhead. As the axe came down, she turned her head to bite down on the shaft, then with a twist of her powerful neck, she snapped it like a twig. At the same time, her massive hand wrapped around Tata's chest and neck, holding him like a ragdoll.
Tata was exhausted. He knew he couldn't outrun the Scourge. He could feel her hand squeezing down, and he had no way to escape. Tata grabbed her arm with both hands and bit down hard. His teeth dug in deep enough to draw blood and she dropped him to the ground. Without thinking he pounced upon her. The beast stumbled backwards to the ground in surprise as he desperately clawed and bit at the thick fur around her neck.
She tore him off of her with one hand, throwing him to the side, but the fires of desperation blazed in his eyes and he was upon her once more. The two became a whirl of gnashing teeth and swiping claws as they wrestled, spattering blood across the rocks and trees as their scuffle rolled deeper into the mist and gradually slowed until Tata laid on the ground, pinned down by one massive hand, both of them heaving with exhaustion. The Scourge raised the other hand and slowly brought it to Tata's face.
She pushed the hair from his eyes and straightened his cracked glasses. "You're very strong for one so small." She said softly, a hint of admiration in her voice.
Tata looked up at her through tired eyes. "And you... are very beautiful for a beast."
The beast scoffed, but could not hide the smile creeping at the edges of her lips, nor the blush building in her ears. "And you think compliments will spare you my teeth?"
Tata coughed a tired chuckle. "I am out of options, they are all I have left!"
Her head loomed down closer, lips pulling away from her daggerlike teeth as her jaws opened wide. Tata watched, helpless as her jaws snapped closed. He screwed his eyes shut at the last minute, expecting death.
But instead he felt her jaws clamp down gently on his shoulder. The sension in his body washed away with a sigh and he reached up to wrap his arms around her powerful neck, burying his face into her cheek. He placed his life in her hands. He could only hope she would be merciful.
