Spectrefuse Backstory - Part 2
Here we have part two of my new villain lapin's backstory, some more insight and context for when his ref sheets arrive! Meant for this to be just a couple page thing and it got a wee bit longer than that. Not that it's a bad thing to happen! It also gives reasoning to his name as there has been question marks going up around me since I announced him. --> This is a direct continuation of Part 1.

Not a day following the rescue Dr. Raibudraht had pulled off for Isaac, they were on Darkwood Mountain, the entire ride there was slightly awkward as he was silent halfway there. Then suddenly bombarded Dr. Raibudraht with questions. He knew who the good doctor was, an idol he had growing up and the main inspiration to become a scientist in the first place. Much to his dismay upon learning that another of his idols, Dr. Kross, one of Raibudraht’s old colleagues, was now a villain trying to take over the world with his biological abominations.
Despite that mental setback, his questions included how the amazing intellectual COGG’s member was still among the living after he had been claimed deceased with the destruction of the COGG’s fortress and laboratories along all his associates, though no bodies were ever recovered from the rubble. Just a few random monstrous mutations with no explanation to their origin…well, until now.
Another question that was the heaviest to ask for Isaac was one that arose as they landed on DarkWood. “Why DID you rescue me anyway? You tell me how secret the people of DarkWood keep themselves and that the things created here are not only YEARS ahead of the rest of the world but also could be dangerous if landed in the wrong hands. So why trust me? Why save ME? Why bring me here Dr. Raibudraht?” He looked on in confused shock as he walked alongside the metallic behemoth next to him.
Dr. Raibudraht let out a laugh. “Firstly, please, call me Hector. We’re colleagues now.” Isaac instantly looked up in surprise at Hector. “We’re WHAT?!” Stopping in his tracks he looked down at Isaac.
“Listen, I almost NEVER leave DarkWood, so let me tell you that YES I had reasons for coming to your aid. You're a fellow scientist with a strong head and understanding of the potential dangers of the wrong research and development getting into those wrong hands, not to mention you don’t exist anymore remember? Far as the world is concerned you’re dead, and we have been tracking you ever since that unfortunate incident in your home. So we aren’t worried about trust issues.”
“Additionally why I saved you and why I brought you here go two fold. You were nearly on the brink of discovering the cures for cancers, such a breakthrough has only met milestones on the island so far. With your assistance we can make it a reality…in time. Your skills in the medical field are only as strong as your skills in other endeavors…such as the destructive kind, yes? The kind they were after when they raided your house hmm?”
Isaac slowly looked up at Hector with wide eyes. “How do you know about my old research?” Hector chuckled and winked a glowing red eye at him. “We do our intel well on all we look upon, targets OR potential allies.” Isaac rubbed his shoulders as his expression went from dead shock, slowly changing to boiling rage and anger. THAT is what they were after?! Not his medical breakthroughs but his old life's work?!
The fools had no idea what they were toying with, anyone but him tried to create those compounds in specific temperatures, containment fields, specified amounts, they could wipe out half the damn city…or worse.
Hector let him have his moment of realization before speaking again. “They are a threat to themselves, those people and anyone they sell it too. You want revenge? You want to stop them from getting away with this? You want the world to know what TRUE justice is like?...Then we have work to do, come.” With that the metal beast stomped off. Isaac, trying to absorb everything, looked over onto the ocean sunset.
The world he trusted and loved had taken it all from him, whether it be for profit, their own glory for claiming what was rightfully his or to bring devastation to those they deemed enemies. Isaac’s eyes began to have a glaze as he clenched his fists.
They want destruction…he’ll bring it harder than the invention of the mega ton, starting with a project he long abandoned that combined his knowledge of explosives, medicine and alchemy, a project he had deemed ‘horrific’, the very project that made him bail out of his government contracts. The project he had codenamed the initials: SB, only he knew the actual name. Quickly, he followed Hector into the underground labs.
In the weeks that followed, he spent day and night recalling the details of his abandoned project nearly as much as he spent admiring the wonder and awe that the island's laboratories had to offer. His worries of being an outsider were put to rest as every one of his new colleagues greeted him with enthusiasm and open arms, eager to begin sharing thoughts and theories alike, numerous types of experiments and builds going on around him, from advanced animatronics, robotics, even slime based sentient beings. Alas, as fascinating as they were and his curiosity made him love to know where volunteers for some of them came from, he focused on his task.
Multiple times his mixture had failed, either ignited into a cloud and dust or simply melted through the beakers. Frustration endured, but his resolve was greater, his fellow scientists beginning to worry for him. Not only from the lack of rest but also from him beginning to act strange, angry even…almost as if his work possessed him in a way. Though Hector assured them otherwise, to let the man continue his work, though he did so with a smirk. Alas, they’re trust in Hector was stronger than anything else, so they did so and let the man work in peace.
The times he did rest, Isaac was plagued by nightmares. Tormented memories of his near death experience, his wife cheating on him and leaving him for dead, going with that scumbag crime lord. Usually waking up shaking with rage and sweating, it was only pushing him to finish his project all the more. Soon his progress began to show, the mixture now becoming stable, although a deep radioactive green which made those around him worry, he would simply grin and gaze into it. As if he was hypnotized by it, it was showing a side they were not sure if they liked.
After a few more weeks, countless tests and samples…it was ready. A dark night, clear skies, nearly midnight. Most of the lab staff had gone home, only Hector, Isaac and an assistant of Hector’s remained. Isaac was shirtless and preparing a strapdown table. A sizable injector hovered over top, a pair of needles on each side. The assistant stared at the concoction that was in the injectors reservoir, the glow from it alone made her feel like it was almost alive.
Hector was going over the notes handed to him by Isaac, though he primarily dealt in robotics and cyber science, he still knew a strong path into biotics. Closing the book of notes he let off a low sigh. “Isaac, going over these…are you certain you don’t want to reconsider and run some more tests?”
Isaac plopped down onto the table and began to slip into the straps, each of them tightening as he did. “No Hector, I have gone over the formulas thousands of times, possibly more. Not to mention countless credits in destroyed lab equipment and my tiresome nights filled with nightmares, this is happening NOW whether you help me or not.”
Hector gave a nod and handed the book to his assistant, then gestured her to go into the next room to monitor Isaac’s vitals, of which she quickly did so, she wasn’t sure what was gonna happen but she wanted to be a safe distance away. His love for science was only as strong as his concern for the safety of those not involved in the actual experiments.
Stepping forward he assisted Isaac with the straps, not hesitating a second. This was Isaac’s work, it was his choice, Hector simply stated his concerns, Isaac denounced them, that was enough for Hector. As the final strap on Isaac’s head tightened, Hector looked down on him with his bright red eye gaze, Isaac just nodded to him.
Stepping back Hector turned to the terminal next to him and initiated the injection process. Isaac called out to that large mechanical mastermind. “Remember, the EXACT doses at the EXACT time spans I wrote down.” Giving a grunt and nod in response, Hector turned the switch, making the injector aim and push two needles into his neck and one in each arm. The pain from the large needles made him growl and tense up before he tried his best to relax.
Isaac’s eyes slowly looked over at the assistant in the other room, who gave Hector a worried look herself. Isaac then turned his gaze towards Hector who raised his brow as he exclaimed. “Right, time to scream.” As he hit the button for the first dose, it felt like a jolt of hot lighting into Isaac’s veins.
The surge of pain and abrupt shock to his system made him tense up entirely, his arms and legs straining against the straps. His vitals began to quickly rise, causing the monitors to go berserk. Bracing himself for the next dose, a much larger dose of the reservoir. Hector simply did as instructed and hit the next dial, which caused Issac to scream. “RAAGGHH!!” His eyes now were glowing the same green as the mixture.
His vitals started to skyrocket as he began to struggle and strain against the straps, his brain feeling like it was being surged with acidic magma, his organs and bones feeling like they were melting while growing stronger at the same time. His heart started to become visible on his chest, the green glow starting to burn the brightest there.
Hector's assistant pounded on the window as she yelled into the intercom “His vitals are out of control! Shut it off!!” Isaac snapped his now glowing green eyes at Hector as he growled under his words. “Don’t you DARE! NEXT DOSE! I can take it!!” Hector looked up at his assistant with a shrug and a smirk as he the third to last dail, an even larger dose.
Isaac’s struggles now began to be more like body wide spasms, shaking the table as he roared in pain. The assistant could take no more as she bolted out of the labs in fear, Hector on the other hand simply stood there following the instructions, not blaming the girl for running out of fear. Not many could stand to see the horrific sides of science. She would be welcome to return tomorrow if she wished, otherwise some other form of work would be found.
Turning the dial to initiate the next dose Hector watched, it felt as if moments were going by slowly but insanely fast at the same time. Hector himself having memories of his old compatriot turned sinister villain. It made him wonder if Isaac was the answer to what if, if Kross had become good and used his knowledge for the better.
His trip down memory lane was interrupted by Isaac’s screams “ FINAL DOSE, DUMP THE REST OF IT!!” Hector made no expression or movements other than stare at the flailing struggling lapin on the table and turn the last dial to max, sending the rest of the mixture into his veins.
At that moment Isaac felt like his body wanted to explode all over the lab room, the machines tracking his vitals had gone off the meter, as if his body was being taken to a whole other level that medical devices couldn’t track. The straps of the table could hold him back no longer as he began breaking them one by one.
Hector watched closely, once the mixture was finished he flicked back the switches to remove the needles. Isaac held his hands to his chest, over his heart while his eyes rolled up before closing. A flail of his arm sent one of the medical tool pans to the ceiling, destroying a light fixture. Due to the lab's safety measures, the power to the room went out, a safety mechanism for blowouts to protect other projects in the rest of the lab.
Hector went to the other side of the room to punch in an override to turn the lights back on, all the while hearing Isaac grunting and making movements in the dark. “Isaac! Isaac! Are you alright?!” After a few moments, the lights slowly came back on and he turned around to see Isaac standing upright and breathing slowly and heavily.
Isaac cracked his neck as he slowly reopened his eyes, his voice sounding different, a slight echo to it as if two entities were speaking as one. “Never, been, better.” Looking to the wall near him, he noticed it was a one way mirror, the mirror side looked at him. Stepping to it he went over an observation of himself. His eyes were a bright two toned green. The area over his heart was glowing bright green, pulsing with his normal heartbeat. Looking at his hands and feet they shimmered with the same green glow, as if covered by some energy.
The final major change he was seeing was his physique, the mixture had made him go from nerdy homebody to a buff athletic frame, an unforeseen side effect, but not unwelcome. He took a few moments to take mental notes before turning back to Hector. “The base is set, time for training.”
Hector nodded once and smirked. “I did have ideas for an outfit and armor, something to blend you into the public, conceal all needed tools and gadgets but also allow for some fluid movement unlike most bulky armor sets. Though I dare say, with how that went I’d almost claim that seemed like something a Villain would do, no?”
Isaac laughed and shook his head. “No, just someone who had the resolve and now has the power to see it through.” Hector gave an approving smirk and nod as he picked up a tablet next to him and put in an order to have the light fixture repaired.
Setting the tablet down and going around to get a better look at the final results of the experiment. Hector definitely considered what was going to transpire from him would lead to him being seen as a villain, but that mattered little to Hector. All that mattered is how Isaac saw things, and what Isaac visualized it all as, Hector most certainly agreed.
He gave a chuckle as he looked Isaac over carefully, the scientist in him rather impressed with Isaac’s work. “Yes, indeed. Well, you will need a callsign then, all of us here of the highest tiers have one, myself included, so…what shall it be?”
Isaac grabbed the undershirt and lab coat he had been wearing, only to realize that neither fit him anymore due to the increased muscle tone. Looking down he even noticed his slacks were ripping and his shoes had burst open, shrugging at the menial loss of his clothes. “What do you think is best?”
Hector instantly shook his head. “No, that’s not how it works. Everyone picks their own, that’s how it is. Surely you can come up with something with that big brilliant brain, yes?” Isaac thought about it for a few moments before he moved his gaze to his chest, his heart area glowing with each pulse, like an organic power core.
Lifting his hands to look at them again, he believe he had a name, some may think it stupid and most certainly would get it’s meaning twisted if not wrong entirely. “My name will be my original passion, one of my peaks in my career, the exact thing that has made me what I am now.”
Raising a brow in confusion, Hector let those words sink in before replying. “So…your callsign is to be SB? Referring to the name on the project title.” Isaac let out a scoffing laugh before shaking his head.
“No, no Hector. THAT was the project's name when given to my old contractors. When you said that you knew that I understand the risks of science and the caution that must be taken. Well, I left out some vital notes in it, in case they tried to replicate it perfectly, full name included. Only the initials were put to document and only I ever knew its true name, another failsafe in case they realized my notes were incomplete and they went searching for it behind my back.”
Hector metnally applauded at Isaac’s foresight, for as long as it lasted anyway. “Very well, then what IS its name…and your callsign?” Isaac quickly went back into the room the assistant had been monitoring his vitals from and grabbed his projects notes, answering Hector as he came back. “Spectrefuse”
Hector mulled the words over and over curiously. “Well, I could make assumptions such as Spectre referring to being some form of phantom or forgotten ghost of some sort.”
Isaac had been scribbling results in his notes as he quickly replied, snapping the book shut. "Correct, everyone thinks I am gone, a ghost, a forgotten memory lost in the files of time. They stole my research in hopes they can replicate it into weapons, primarily explosives and chemical compounds. They made the world forget about ME, I shall do the same to THEM! Explosives tend to have a rather grand affect on making things forgettable by making them...disappear." ending his sentence with a chuckle.
Hector and anyone who could see him now would EASILY tell he had changed, for the better in Hector’s opinion. Leaning forward Hector whispered to him. “Welcome to MY world, we continue first thing in the morning, I suggest you take some time to get acquainted with your new look on life…and, perhaps get some new clothes?”
Isaac nodded to Hector before he headed out to do just that, he would let loose on his enemies soon. He was so forgettable back then, he’d show them just how UNFORGETTABLE he can be.
