He'd probably look something like this!
So yeah, a trend I've noticed going on in my circle of friends is drawing Casey Jones Jr., from the movie Dumbo, as if it were a real pheasable locomotive. A good friend of mine on DA did a really good job with his, though I think he lost the "feel" of the loco. But in terms of reality his design I think is more practical.
My version here was a bit of a challenge. Tryinging to draw the locomotive as a "real" engine, yet still retain the look and feel of Casey Jr. from the movie. I drew heavy inspiration from 1870s comuter service locomotives. Small and diminuative. Excelerate and decelerate quickly and make frequent stops.
I think I hit the nail on the head with this design though. I managed to give the engine a realistic pheasable appearence and still retained the look and feel of Casey Jones Jr. And just like in the movie I gave it a 2 axel tender, only a more realistic one. And also to further enhance that Disney feel I gave the tendr a fancy tapered tender flare.
As nice as the engine looks it would probably real rough riding even with the lead wheels. This is due to the closely spaced drivers and thus allowes a lot of wiggle room for the locomotive to "hunt" while traversing the rails. Even so I like the design and I hope all of you do as well.
Comment if you fav please!!

Cute little engine. I can't help but recall the little Porters my friend Jim likes, and of course the live steam model locomotives at Hunter Park run by the Riverside Live Steamers group. This would be a nice little engine for a short line, maybe even an "Around the park" type run.
Well... This little engine looks to me like it'd be a fun "Live Steam" model to build. Even in say a diminutive 4" gauge it'd be powerful enough to haul a full grown "Engineer" around the tracks. Keep up the great work 'cause your drawings always get my mental "Gears" turning, despite the fact they've been heavily coated with "Crater X" lately.
Hummm. I've been designing a model steam engine for 3D modeling class. I thought about a full locomotive, but I figured that was too complicated, regardless of any simplification. Something small like that though would probably be much easier, especially if you can skip the brakes.
Probably make it in one of the larger scales, as an alcohol burner. Mini hobby servos would provide control.

There would probably be 3D if only as modeling to make tweaks--programs like Solidworks have modeling software so you can find how things work under load. It can also take a model and produce a full set of drawings without as much trouble.
I'd need a few more drawings of it to make one though, and then I'd have to figure out which scale would work best. Probably O, just so the machining is easier--bigger parts will be somewhat easier to work with, and servos can be tucked in better.

Gmax is a 3d modeling program I'm familiar with. That's what is mostly used to create additional content for the Trainz Railroad Simulator game I like.
I was just about to start learning how to use the program to make my own additional content for the game, and them my laptop fried on me. *sighes*
Oh well, it just gives me more time for me to plan for future modeling ideas.

I found while looking for my own, a freeware CAD designed by someone specifically for model train layouts:

Don't know if that would be useful to you.
