If it's been mentioned before I definitely missed it, but I'm super hyped that you're going into a game design focus soon with your learning!
Have you pursued this much yet? If not I have a spectacular resource for beginning programming.
(I'm delving into game design and development myself -- getting a degree in Computer Science right now~)

CSE 142: Essentially the equivalent to the first beginning programming class at any major university. I'm probably completely biased but I think the UW has a brilliant way to introduce students to programming -- extremely user friendly. I'm almost positive most places can be publicly accessed so feel free to download as many .pdf files you can find: (Java isn't the best programming language for gaming but at this point it's probably the easiest way to learn the basics)

If you click the CSE logo in the upper left corner the site will bring you to the current quarter of CSE 143. I haven't looked around too much here yet but the access quality is a tad lower than the 142 page. This might change when the 'cool professor' takes over next quarter :)
ALSO, last summer before I started CSE I was watching recorded lectures from MIT's OpenCourseWare program, though it was pretty dry. Here's that: (taught in Python)

Beyond that, there are countless sources online for teaching yourself game coding once you are strong on the foundations. It's also rather beneficial to keep an eye on some of the main indie/dev sites within the industry to keep up with news and current technology (far beyond both of us at this point but fun to explore). Here's a couple of the biggies:

Yupyup. Let me know if you get hung up on any of the 142 stuff. I have a pretty decent base in the class and will probably be TA for it all next year. AND.. I'm just a nice guy like that~
Btw, what's your goal with programming and game design? Hoping to make a career of it, just go indie, or just add this to your resume of life skills? If you don't mind my asking of course.
