Your current approach it more than adequate. Your anatomy is attractive, and your approach seem to be fairly quick. The only thing I can think of is that you need to broaden your portfolio. In one direction you need a few Fantasy cliche pieces, like a Western European castle in the background, and in the foreground a Peasant boy looking concerned when confronted by a small magical creature. Another would be drawing your version of Satan *with his pants on) confronting a Librarian (modern library, with PCs against the back wall), and finally a human woman near a space ship conversing with Some Aliens. The only piece you seem to be lacking are deep backgrouns with clear air (Because everyone likes Lake, mountain and blue sky paintings.
But in general your approach and technique is sound, It's just taking a slightly more cinematic approach to your subject figures, but having enough Non subject to allow for the title and author name on the right half, The same for the spine, and the Blurb on the back.
Even I have been paid to do book covers, so if I can do it with mymeager skills, you can do it to make a crap ton of money.

Thanks. I'll definitely be taking this to heart. With upcoming personal pieces, if I can find the time, I'll be aiming for some of these bars just to see how well I can hit them and how quickly I can make it happen. I'm feeling just a little bit more confident these days. Discovering that I apparently lack a whole suite of senses that normal people have really put things in perspective for me.
That last sentence is cryptic.
But in general I am confident that you can do this, as you definitely have the skills, and nothing you have ever put out that I can remember was actively ugly or unattractive (So no horror covers for you ). If you want, give me a contact, in Notes, and I can send you the book cover examples I did, plus a scan of one that is in your default pallette. I can do some other research on my end about how to let people know you are available for covers, as the old method of putting art into the Worldcon Art show isn't as influential as it was 10 years ago (when I last went to a con).

"That last sentence is cryptic."
Not only do I have aphantasia but I also have SDAM which means I can't relive memories from a first person perspective and on top of that, I also cannot hear songs in my head and I cannot mentally conjure the tastes of flavors which are all apparently things normal people can do. I can get a song stuck in my head but I don't really "hear" it and I know what foods taste like but I cannot conjure that taste in my mouth. Kinda fucken bonkers really that people can do these things.
More to the point, realizing I have aphantasia gave me a better understanding of where all my insecurities come from... well, maybe not "all" but a significant portion. For most of my life, art was my sole reason for existing. It was a defense mechanism against bullies. It was what made me special enough not to throw in the trash. Now, in a world utterly saturated with artists who are as good as me, better, or far superior, I've had to redefine myself as a person and as an artist.
Realizing I have aphantasia drew into sharp focus why I gravitate so strongly towards 3D. It serves as a stand-in for my lack of mind's eye, as a sort of mental prosthesis. Sculpting in Zbrush/blender is likely as close to visualizing as I will ever get until/if I'm ever granted access to Dalle or something like it.
It also made me realize why all the shit people used to lob at me for using 3D stung so hard. People would openly accuse me of cheating, of being a fraud, a hack, a tryhard, and so on because I rely on 3D. It hurt because I never realized how much 3D is a part of my artistic makeup. It was like they weren't just criticizing my methods but a fundamental part of who I am... if that makes sense.
In any case, understanding these things really just snapped things into place for me.
As for horror, I actually really love horror. I don't do much of it in my art but I promise you, I can. I just wish I had more time. Busy busy busy.
I'll drop you a note soon.....

Fascinating to hear that your aphantasia extends to other senses as well. I wonder how common that is. People just take all of this stuff for granted. Brains are amazing. It's really amazing what a talented artist you are considering the workarounds required. That's some serious dedication. Though, of course, not knowing anything else, you've made your own way through it.
