I bet them wearing goggles referenced an unused sprite of Sonic wearing goggles from Sonic 1. Because fun fact: There actually is an unused sprite of Sonic wearing goggles in the BETA version of Sonic 1. This would allow him to breathe underwater and was specifically used in Labyrinth Zone
