I feel sure it's an optical illusion (per se) provided by the magnifying glass' visual obstruction of Mercedes' left pupil and iris, but her 'magnified' eye on the glass side to Mercedes obverse behind it, provides her view a very inspectful, almost baleful gaze. But it might only be her considerable focus, and that's very important when you're detecting and peeking upon the unknown.

My brain admittedly was trying to figure out the optics and angles of that view. But yes, Mercedes can get quite focused.
