A project I've been working recently.
----
Cool mid-September afternoons were common in the city as an autumn wind blew pass one store in particular, a sleek beauty salon with ‘Maison de Bernice’ written on top in an elegant script. Inside, there was chatting and giggling as numerous young women were having their hair cut or washed by the uniform-wearing staff members. It was then that the bell chimes as the glass door opens with a pair of magenta high heel pumps stepping inside towards the receptionist. These pumps were worn by a pair of shapely legs that taper to a curvy figure, wearing a cream-colored dress with magenta detail and bodice. The lovely woman who entered stood at 5’3” with fair, silky smooth skin, but what made her stood out more than her figure and dress would most likely be her two heads.
Most of the women getting their hair done assumed they were seeing things while turning around to see the two-headed woman walking back by them. Both heads were identical, each having a heart-shaped face with a button nose leading to rose-colored pouty lips, thin eyebrows above almond-shaped eyes with steel-blue irises, and light-blonde hime-cut-styled hair running down the waist. But were those women to notice more to the newcomer than her two heads, they might have took note of each head’s different expression: The right-head having a concerned look on her face while the one on the left looked not to be bothered by the gossiping behind their back.
Before the two-headed woman is the receptionist, a brunette a few years her age. “Can I help you?” She asked the two-headed woman as she stood in front of her, trying to keep a straight face. “I have an 2:45 appointment with Bernice,” the woman’s left head answered. “It’s under Heather,” the right head adds, sounding light and timid compared to her twin’s deep and haughty voice. The receptionist looks on the computer screen and sees two names both listed for Bernice’s 2:45 appointment, ‘Charlene Heather’ and ‘Charlotte Heather’.
“Care to wait a moment?” The receptionist leaves her desk to the back of the building where Bernice has just finished cleaning her station. Bernice, the head stylist and manager, is Thai-American in her mid 30s with light-brown skin, ruby-colored lips, and auburn hair tied in a ponytail, along with a pair of square-rimmed glasses on her face. Like her employees, she is wearing a blue polo shirt and black jeans with matching sneakers. “Mam, you have a client…clients…A Ms. Heather?” the receptionist informs Bernice, who noticed the uneased tone in her voice. “You’re just new here so you don’t know about our special VIP,” Bernice explains with a smile. “How about you take a ten minute break?” Bernice suggests to the still astonished receptionist. “Oh…Okay…”
Back out front, Ms. Heather’s right head Charlene is feeling self-conscious from being stared at. Charlotte, on the other hand, was unfazed despite sensing her twin’s nervousness. “You really need to ignore these gawkers,” Charlotte whispers into her twin’s left ear. “But…” Charlene was about to say something before Charlotte harshly adds, “We’re twice the woman any of them are.”
It was then that Bernice approaches Ms. Heather, noticing her heads talking amongst themselves. “Right this way ladies,” Bernice says with a smile while guiding Ms. Heather to her station. Ms. Heather sits in the chair, both her heads feeling comfortable while Bernice places a nylon cape over the two-headed woman’s body below the necks.
“It’s been a while since you were here,” Bernice says to Ms. Heather. ”How do you want your hair done this time?” “We like to keep it the same,” Charlotte answers for herself and Charlene. “Let’s shampoo your hair first,” Bernice announces while turning on some soothing music before placing two shampoo basins behind Ms. Heather’s heads. The stylist then proceeds to lather and rinse them one head at a time, repeating the process with conditioner. She then takes out a comb and pair of scissors to brush the twins’ hair while trimming down parts of it.
Forty minutes pass before Bernice finished her work on Miss Heather’s blonde hair, trimmed out to be managed for the next month or so. “There you go,” Bernice says as she takes out two mirrors so her twin can see the back of her head. “You’re still the cutest twins in the world.” Charlenne had a soft smile on her face over how good she looks before hearing her twin say, “Let’s go Lenni.” The two-headed woman gets to her feet and pays Bernice 40 dollars for the work, twice the amount due to having two heads. With the transaction done, Ms. Heather takes their leave of the salon while still being the source of hen cackling.
Ms. Heather walked over to a bus-stop, both heads stepping into the bus admits the bystanders’ stares and gapes as they flash their bus pass before taking a seat in the back. From Charlenne’s perspective, she has been in the backseat for most of her life as Charlotte is more dominant twin. Despite Charlenne admiring her twin’s confidence and take-charge attitude, there are some traits of Charlotte that she did not approved of. Among these well-noted traits would have to be Charlotte’s taste of clothing that show off their body while Charlene prefers wearing more comfortable outfits, the two of them alternating attire choices daily.
Another of Charlotte’s unsavory traits would be her knowledge of how and when to pressing, Charlenne’s buttons, having noticed her twin having a faint smile on her face while keeping an eye out for something. Charlotte grins while whispering into her twin’s left ear, “Looking for someone?” Charlenne blushes in response, hating how well her twin presses her buttons. That’s not to say Charlenne is pushover when it comes to standing up for herself or her loved ones. In fact, she had managed to talk Charlotte into not getting them in trouble most of the time. Despite their differences, the twins do have a lot in common besides sharing a body…
They both enjoy going to the movies, love to shop, and they share a passion for cooking.
After exiting the bus, Charlene and Charlotte walk down the street before reaching a coffee shop named ‘Cuppa Joe Café’. They enter through the glass doors towards the counter where their favorite barista Jake is waiting for them. A slender man with dark-red hair and freckles, he and his brother owning the café together, he takes notice of the two-headed woman's freshly cleaned and trimmed hair.
"Lenni! Lotti" Jake says as the twins approache them "Your usual?" He asks while pointing at a couple of cups filled with espresso.
"That would be great, thank you." Charlotte answers with Jake preparing a cup of Doppio Espresso.
"Here you go...Enjoy!" Jake says once he finished the drink, the twins thanking him before each head takes a whift of the espresso’s sweet aroma before taking turns sipping from their cup. They soon recieve their receipt, Charlene taking money out of their purse to pay Jake. After paying, the twins step outside and walk a mile or two to their home.
Charlotte and Charlene live in a mansion located in the suburbs of New York City, purchased for them by their parents after they graduated from college. The house is big enough for four people, but the twins don't mind living alone. They enter through the front door, heading straight for the kitchen to make themselves some lunch. They open the refrigerator and take out a package of chicken breast, placing it on the cutting board before slicing the meat thinly. Once the meat is ready, Charlotte and Charlene put it aside before starting to prepare a salad and mixed the chicken bits into it. Once the salad is ready, the twins place it on a plate along with a side of pasta beofre taking a seat to enjoying the meal they made together.
As the twins finish eating, they decide to mess around on their laptop, browsing the Internet. Charlotte enjoys seeking new articles posted on her and her twin, while Charlene likes reading about other twins like a pair of conjoinedtwin girls who were born in China. The two-headed woman soon gets a skype call from Charlotte's boyfriend, Andrew, asking if he could stop by later that evening.
"Sure," Charlotte tells him, Charlene not as excited as her sister to see her boyfriend. "You're taking us to dinner tonight, right?"
"Of course, I'll pick you up at seven."
Charlotte hangs up the phone and looks over at her sister. "What?"
"Nothing..." Charlene replies, Charlotte knowing her twin is not really into dating.
"Why you don't want to go out with Andrew?" Charlotte asks and Charlene answers, "Because we just met the guy a few weeks ago. We barely know the guy."
"Whatever," Charlotte responds. "Just don't embarrass me tonight."
It got a bit awkward between Charlene and Charlotte from there, but nothing too serious. After cleaning their dish, they head over to their bedroom to get ready for the night.
