And now the final release this month…another character who benefited from R-Day…though while her situation is largely better than Kent Scarlett’s, she’s no less thrilled about it. Here’s Red Riding Hood (formerly Little Red Riding Hood).
You know the story of what happened to her when she was eleven, most likely.
Girl goes to visit grandmother, gets harassed by a wolf, nearly gets eaten, gets saved from being eaten by a woodcutter.
Well, you’re certainly less familiar with what happened to her sometime after that.
How, about a year later the emboldened Red stole the axe of her grandmother’s lover (the Woodsman) to try and kill the Baba Yaga who’d been sighted nearby.
The Baba Yaga was significantly more benevolent than the rumors about her implied, and was fed up with her attractive but, malevolent sister setting her up for their own deeds.
Granting the axe magic power, she told Red she could keep it if the young girl could rid the world of her evil sister.
Which Red did, starting off a long and illustrious career as one of the greatest bounty hunters of her time. Which considering she originated from 16th Europe, was no easy feat.
She lived longer than people were expected to, but still perished in her 60s…not in battle, from her own love of alcohol. This would have been the end…
Until R-Day happened, when she found herself alive again mere seconds after dying. Among a whole host of others…AND she was eleven again.
It turned out that despite the many more noteworthy things she did in her life, Red’s first meeting with the Big Bad Wolf remained so noteworthy she came back quite young.
While far from alone, Red attempted to adjust to this strange new world. And she’s…well, not exactly succeeding but at least she’s trying.
Most upsetting to her, is how her beloved magic axe is now in a museum and she can’t take possession of it, she can’t even work as a bounty hunter (or as they were called in her day ‘monster hunters’) due to the modern era having less lax standards for the job’s qualifications.
This has not deterred Red from attempting to meet those standards, even if the fact her best friend is royalty was the sole reason she found out how to read and write.
Instead working out a deal that she can get her axe back if she fits the bare minimum of requirements for having the job of a bounty hunter.
Which as it so happens, is a high school diploma or the equivalent thereof.
Now this was four years ago, Red is presently 15 and despite various setbacks from a less-than-educated past, she’s no less determined to get her property back, and hopefully adjust to the new time period…HOPE being the keyword here.
Red has a fiery temper and is more used to a hostile lifestyle than the relatively comfortable one she currently has, in fact she’s more likely to clash with 21st century social norms than her best friends, Snow White and Anne W. What’s more, even though she’s underage again and it WAS alcohol consumption that killed her, she’s still pretty fond of booze…and even more fond of fighting. She has gotten in no end of trouble from her willingness to throw down.
But her abrasive tendencies aside, she’s pretty loyal to her friends (even if they can frustrate her for reasons valid and otherwise, and even if it can often be hidden under a layer of sarcasm and roughness, she does have a caring side.
She’s also a bit worried about her being in the present, such a thoroughly different world than the one she left, she’s unsure if her own resurrection was a good thing or not, but will have to figure this out for herself as she lives her second life.
