My first thought is "He looks younger". Thinking about it some more, I'd say it makes him look more open, less guarded. I never noticed it before, but the old style has a sort of hood effect around his face. This doesn't, or at least not as much.
Both looks are good, and I could see him going with whichever one fits him at that point in his life.
