"She lives by two rules..."
Before you say ANYTHING...I'd like the record to state, that I'm NOT one to take advantage of another when they're experiencing a low point in their life!!! [Thank you VERY much] with that being said...I DO have a tendency to be around others when they may have had a bad day...or 12!!!
Yes! I should've made my presence known as I approached her! She didn't hear me coming so I startled her and she'd have every right to, at the very least, slapped my head clean off my shoulders...I'd simply would've shrugged and figure "serves me right!!!" But alas, I felt compelled to give her my handkerchief!
One may say it was a useless gesture since at this point we both were standing outside in the pouring rain! On top of the young lady was naturally wary of taking things from strangers! It would seem that one thing we have in common was a habit of wishing for rainy days...a means to drown our sorrows...and more importantly...hide our tears from the world!
She knew and after a moment took my handkerchief and was on her way!!! I thought that was that! I had done my good deed for the day and soon was also on my way as well! It wasn't until years later that our paths crossed again. It was the annual company meeting/party! A gathering of the Big Wigs, Shareholders, Rival CEOs...you name it, they're present and accounted for!
And that's when I saw her...she was nearly impossible to miss with the dress. Her posture, demeanor, the way she carried herself...could've sworn it was a whole different woman! I must've starred for too long, for sure enough we made eye contact! I tried to play it cool, but before I knew it she was on her way towards me. She grabbed two drinks from a passing waiter...she was smooth about it too. The first one she took off the platter as the waiter passed by...the second she snagged with her tail, and then effortlessly whipped it around into her free hand...all without making a scene and all while keeping eye contact with me!
She handed me my drink and then escorted me to a nearby table. She broke the ice with small talk, mainly about my company and it was coming along. It was obvious she knew a great deal about me as she called me out as somewhat of a "black sheep" among wolves. The guests of this particular party weren't exactly upstanding citizens, but I was one of the few who climbed the ladder with clean hands...but I also knew the importance of keeping appearances!
Which led things full circle as the Inteleon before me reached into her purse and returned to me the handkerchief, first off confirming that this was indeed the same woman as before (seriously her dementor REALLY threw me for a loop) and thanking me for the gift. She told me she had no more tears to cry! I asked if she was sure, to which she said "yes" BUT she knew where to find me if she needed to!
She finished her drink and got began to leave but not before properly introducing herself: "Rivers, Brooke Rivers!"
