Reza The Homosexual Squirrel In: Let's Sketch Boys
Full color, full gay version: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/48391673/
Normally I upload WIPs before the final to give you guys an idea of just how closely you should be paying attention to me in the next several days, you know "Oh that one's SFW, I'll just -watch for a week or so..." but I figured the final on this one would work better if it was seen all at once. I was of course wrong due to the aforementioned phenomenon.
Regardless, here's a sketch version of it, and this is yet another drawing in which I actually drew it on two sheets of paper and then spliced it together, digitally. The upper body and thighs were on one sheet and a separate pair of legs were on another, since I normally can't fit a full standing character onto the page while drawing at the size I like. I've been surprisingly able to pull off this trick a few times, such as on the Shane Laota drawing or the "Found You" drawing with the crotch-on-head. Hm? Remember? Crotch on head? Yeah.
Fun fact, since I neglected to ever save a version of this before starting to color it, I had to re-splice the image so the alignment of the legs here will be a little off than on the final version. I feel like I slightly prefer the face on the sketch version but then, I pretty much always do.

Something indeed gets lost between the sketch and color versions. If I care enough about a drawing to do it, I try to sketch it strongly enough that the traditional look still kind of comes through on the final to some degree. I added this as an edit to the description so you probably didn't see it but, I also find the face cuter in the sketch than in the final and I can't entirely pinpoint why, but I admit it's a recurring phenomenon, I almost always prefer the sketch. And if there's a line-art version, I almost always prefer that over all other phases of the drawing. Maybe it's just because it's the first version of it I see so I get used to that as the 'correct' version. Many of the edits I've made to the final since last night were to try and return the face to my perceived version of the cuteness in the sketch. Since I didn't bother reuploading the one I posted to Twitter last night one can see how that older version has more shading on his face and more emphasis on his whisker-pads, whatever you call those. Like I said, it has more 'nyuk nyuk' that intangible rodent quality I try to balance on any given drawing.
Yeah, you can definitely appreciate the differences (though they are quite subtle). I can also very much imagine the ‘first form’ preference being a perceptual thing and in losing that, as you go on to complete it, you just inevitably liking it slightly less. As someone who saw the full colour version first, I can assure you that it’s very lovely and not left lacking.
