Yesterday I visited the ancient westgerman city of Trier.
The Porta Nigra, ancient roman symbol of the city of Trier. Trier is a very old city, it is said that it is the oldest city in Germany. It was originally founded by the Celts as "Treuorum" in the 4th century BC, later conquered by the Romans and renamed "Augusta Treverorum". It was actually a very important city in the roman empire, arguably the most important city north of the Alps. The Porta Nigra (Black Gate) is the north gate in the roman city wall, and it is amazing that this structure is still standing after almost 2000 years.
