Ooh now thats a difficult choice. The Starfury is a great nimble, single pilot, fighter. But the Gunstar probably has more firepower and allows one to pilot and the other to focus on targets. I actually watched a vid the other day, on which is better. They went with the Gunstar.
Depends on the missions. The Gunstar prototype was modified for quick strike missions. Ambush, hit hard, hit fast, get the flock out before your energy supplies run out. It's energy budget is worse than the White House's. It could perhaps give you a minute, maybe a minute and a half of continuous combat ops at full power, after that, you were sucking fumes and down to Death Blossom. The production models could be relied on lower energy assault and extended combat ops, but not with the punch the prototype has.
Starfuries could keep cooking for extended operations and put some serious moves on anyone around them. Plus the abilities to handle multi-mission profiles like salvage, reconnaissance, picket duty, deep space ops, it is the Black n Decker of starfighters.
The one that everyone aspires for, the X-Wing, is THE Space Superiority fighter. On par with the F-15 Eagle, it can handle anything but covert ops drops. Put 12 well-trained pilots together that can think outside the box, it could make any capital ship VERY nervous.
But the bottom line is the quality of the pilots. Its been proven again and again, you put a unique squadron of pilots together that can out-think an opponent, out-shoot them when it comes to it, and get down n dirty without complaint, you could take whole planets without much harm or loss.

Awesome work! I love this movie even today. Although Gunstar One was an incredible piece of hardware I have to admit Centauri's Starcar was always my favorite vehicle from the movie. Can pass off as an Earth car (capable of 303+ mph), can fly and has warp drive tech in space. I'll take one.
OH GOD YEAH!! LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! I can quote the whole damn luau from memory to this very day!
This is such an awesome rendering of Grig. I can just hear him shouting "CHAAAAARGE!!" pushing the Gunstar into the final battle, here. After all, without a first-class Starnavigator like Grig, how's a Starfighter supposed to even find the battle, or successfully engage his targets? Pilot and gunner have to be in harmony to win the day.
"Steady! Don't fight the chair! Take your time, watch your gunsights, lead your targets! And above all: relax!"
"Terrific. I'm about to get killed a million miles from nowhere with a gung-ho iguana who tells me to 'relax'!"
I love this piece, Zen, that's amazing.
Now draw his wife-oid or a few of his 6,000 Griglings!
Better yet, I dare you to draw Commander Kril with as much menace as you gave Grig noble purpose.

"So long, Alex! Have fun! May the luck of the Seven Pillars of Bulu be with you at all times! Oh, someday these cheapskates will thank Centauri, trust me!"
Robert Preston as fast-talking recruiter Centauri was also a highlight of the movie.
"You're walking away from history. History! Did Chris Columbus say he wanted to stay home? No! What if the Wright brothers thought that only birds should fly? And did Galoka think the yulus were to ugly to save?!"
"Who's Galoka?"
"Nevermind."
"Hey, listen, Centauri: I'm not any of those guys, I'm just a kid from a trailer park!"
"If that's what you think, then that's all you'll ever be!"

Also, on the Ko-dan, notice how their mothership looks like a circuitboard inside, with the soldiers plugged into their stations like components?
I think that's how most Ko-dan live; wired into their technology like Borg, enslaved to their nobility like Commander Kril. That was creepy, too.
Also note how creepy and gross that one was when Xur knocked off his helmet with his scepter? The distended, malformed eyestalks, like his actual eyes hadn't developed properly, or had shrunk from neglect, and that beastly roar of pain as he lay on the floor?
Not fun being a Ko-dan grunt, I'm sure. :P

I always thought the same thing. They could have come out with a sequel "The Next Starfighter" with Alex returning to Earth some years later (like now) to get his younger brother Louis to come back with him and train to be their next ace starfighter. Or something like that.
I always thought that would could have used a revisit somehow. The Star League, the Xurian cult that sprung up from Rylos, maybe learning more about the Ko-dan and their original Emperor (who was obviously planning to double-cross Xur, if Kril and the meteor gunner's quiet aside is to be believed: "How long must we endure this fool?!" Kril silently gestures to his gunner to keep quiet)
well we couldnt get Grig back since Dan was long gone, same with Preston.
I think we didnt get a sequel because there was no way the most likable characters in the damn film could reprise the roles. Oherily and Preston both were gone too soon after.
I dunno if a prequel could work... its REALLY hard to get anyone but the 80s generation interested in an 80s prequel, and the audience just isnt there anymore.
No, i think you do a sequel with Alex's little brother definitely, like Skyfox says.
I mean, the kid's playing the fucking game at the end of the movie anyway, right? :D

i saw that a while back and i thought maybe so but... the more i look at what he said, its allllll just speculation right now. =P
maybe a series... see, THAT would be pretty awesome, in fact more awesome, since sci-fi space operas are making a big splash these days

And here, as a bonus, the song that played in Jack's truck when Beta was trying to pass for Alex and started laughing like crazy! It's called "Incommunicado" by Cliff Magness
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbIdEk7xf7I
"...so, Blake comes back and he grabs his pants, right? He looks at her old lady and says 'I hope this doesn't rule out dinner on tuesday night!' laughs That's my man!"

When I was a kid I must have seen that movie a dozen times. My best friend had cable TV, and after the movie left the theaters it was on cable all the time. Every time it was on when I was at his house we watched it. If only we could have cars that could fly to the next star system in a matter of minutes!
You DO realize i gotta show "The Last Starfighter" now on the Wednesday night watch party. :D
i forgot how really wonderful that film is. Holds together from a plot and story outline really well, the acting is phenomenal for Robert Preston and Dan O'Herily (the best thing in Halloween 3 too), and it brought a new found love, i think, to arcade games the world over.
immediately after seeing this, i think i called a few friends and we invaded the local arcade downtown.
thats how this movie affected me. :D

Grig - "Now you look HUMAN!" "This may come to you as a shock, but he doesn't want to be a Starfighter!" "With my Wife-foid and 300 Ginglings." "Death is a primitive concept. We prefer to think of them as if they're battling evil. In another dimension!" "I'll have it all figured out by the time we reach the frontier.... Whats that alarm.....The frontier." I loved that dude.
"Your plan might really have worked. What a pity there are no Starfighters left to carry it out."
Alex wipes out the entire Xurian rendezvous point single handedly
"Grig?"
"What is it, Alex?"
A hopeful smirk crosses Alex' face...
"... maybe there is a Starfighter left."

YES! Nailed it!
This pic is so Awesome just not in the work Zen did. but captures all the emotion and idea of what Grig llooked like while Piloting the Gunstar.
"Ahhh you must be Louis. I hear good thing about you!"
Louis "Ya hear that yah slimes, I'm famous!"

Such an underrated gem of a movie. Your rendition captures the intended likeness of Grig quite well.
When this came out in 1984, it was so much of an edge case that it didn't do well in the theaters due to 'gaming' being a fringe thing. If anything it's far more relevant today than it was when it was released.
Many talk about wanting a sequel/prequel/continuation, but it will likely never happen, mostly due to how several of the actors that were in this film, are no longer alive. The story rights are tied up in a legal quagmire, and largely speaking if it was remade, it would lose a lot of the innocent 80's charm that this film had.
The Gunstar was designed by Ron Cobb - If you're familiar with Aliens, you'll know him - he's been behind most sci-fi design in the 80's and 90's
As an interesting aside, and little known fact - The last Starfighter was the -first- film to ever have 100% photo real CGI scenes, before this, the use of computers to render entire movie frames was unheard of. The development company responsible invented normals, point lighting, etc. Every CGI production company owes their current success to this movie. A CRAY MXP was leased and used for nearly 8 straight months to render all the scenes. All the CGI that we saw, was only about half as good as they wanted to present, but in order to get the film completed with out going completely over budget, they had to reduce the quality. A pity because I really would have liked to see what the 'directors version' would have looked like.
a short video that goes into more detail about this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09_Hoecsv7A
As an aside, several years ago I designed a 'fan shirt' for this film because I couldn't find anything that did it any real justice.

When i saw the "Hitch-hiker" the first time in the movie, i don't trust him. I was right! He becomes
the alien-assasin... and later Gul Dukat in Star Trek - Deep Space Nine. (Marc Alaimo)
Oh, and i wanted Lord Krils cool helmet with the mobil visor and microphone!
"... what we do?"
*Visor move*...
"We die!"
