Chapter 59: The Angels have a Talk
“You buying it?”
Cybele Nyx almost jumped out of her skin when the voice cut in from behind her. She was sitting on the rooftop of the college library. A decent enough place for solitude, and it didn’t hurt that there was a vegetable garden up here too, one of the colleges had started rooftop gardening as a ‘green solution’ apparently, but to her benefit it meant roof access was easy and not just filled with HVAC systems. Nyx, and some of the others occasionally came up topside to be alone, something she found herself wanting to do more and more of late, in between her desperate desire to just go home to her husband, slither under the covers and never come out. Today her reason for being alone had been processing the events of the moment. It was more than a little unsettling even now that the arrival of someone who looked for all the world like an angel was NOT the strangest event of the day. The phone call from a dead woman might have taken the cake on that one.
The voice reiterated, “You think its actually this ‘Victoria’ or the other one faking?”
Nyx braced herself and responded. “It’s hard to say. I’ve been outside my expertise for some time now and talking to… well…” She took a breath and turned to the speaker, unsurprised to see the ‘angel’ she took another steeling breath and averted her eyes a bit, the woman still hadn’t dressed.
“Talking to demons is new to you?” Kate said, “Well same here, mostly not worth it.”
“You think it was the demon? Or is it possible it was telling the truth?”
“Difficult to say.”
Nyx got up and turned, “What do you mean ‘difficult’? Isn’t this crap your world? Supernatural BULLSHIT has been fucking up mine for some time and now. You… and.” Nyx paced
“What about me?”
“Shouldn’t YOU be the expert? Shouldn’t you be able to just. TELL us what to do? Or fix it yourself?”
Kate slid into a folding chair near one of the raised garden beds, “If I could snap my fingers and fix this I would. It’s not that simple.”
Nyx sighed leaning her head against the side of an HVAC, “I know. I just want to go back to regular bad guys, in regular cities, not damned demons and supernatural powers.
Kate huffed a half chuckle drawing Nyx’s gaze again before responding, “For one who is so opposed to ‘supernatural’ stuff you seem to have gone out of the way to be a part of it.”
“I DIDN’T WANT THIS” Nyx blurted out turning to face Kate and no longer averting her gaze, “No one believed me. Thought I was insane for talking about demon invasions and all that. I was benched, they SAID it was about my leg, but I could have still done a desk job, like tactical support or analysis. No, I was benched because they thought I was going nuts. I needed to get proof or else they wouldn’t believe it till everyone was dead and that’s why I!... I… Uh…”
“Body slammed me into a transformer and yanked out a handful of my feathers?”
“Y-ya…” Nyx’s expression of anger switched pretty quickly to one of nervousness.
“You had no idea that that wouldn’t kill me did you?”
“Uh…” Nyx fidgeted.
Kate just looked at her counterpart for a long moment, “Are you scared of me?”
Nyx froze trying to process that last point. Was she scared? She wasn’t in immediate danger, at least that she thought. She didn’t’ think the woman, unusual as she was, would just off someone. Her cop senses might be misreading the situation of course as she hadn’t had to try to read an angel before, but she was pretty sure she was right on that point anyway. But was she scared anyway?
“I’m… I’m not scared of you.”
“Oh? But there is something else there isn’t there?”
Nyx looked down. “The demons are actually from ‘hell’ aren’t they?”
“Near enough. Or some sort of purgatory the vengeful dead inhabit. It doesn’t match up exactly with myths if that’s what you mean.”
Nyx took a breath again this time leaning back against the HVAC and staring at the sky, “That means heaven’s real too, and I’m probably not getting in.”
Kate raised and eyebrow. She wasn’t sure what to say exactly so she let the silence ask her question for her.
“I’ve killed a LOT of people” Nyx said, “and not just recently. Though its even worse now, the docs think some of them might still be IN there, so I’m killing civilians along with their demons. Am I going to end up one of the damned too? A demon like the others if they ever manage to take me down”
Kate continued to study the cat woman.
“Well? You’re the expert on these things?” Nyx got louder, “Am I a monster or not? Oh, holy one?” She finished with an imitation of Mary’s voice.
Kate stood and sighed, “I think you’re jumping to a lot of conclusions. You aren’t the only one.” Kate picked a ripe looking cherry tomato from one of the garden beds and ate it while pondering her next words, “I think Mary needs to believe what she believes. The ‘holy mistress’ stuff she talks about all the time? Helps her cope with what happened to her.”
“What she went though? And are you saying she’s wrong about you being” Nyx gestured at all of kate, “what you clearly look like”
“She lived with the demons for days at least, if not longer, not willingly of course. She was their, er, ‘recreation’ if you catch my meaning.” Kate paused for a moment, “It might actually be part of why she can see me. Extensive time with other worldly beings and all that... Though I’m just guessing at that part.
“As for me and this question about my providence.” Kate came over to Nyx and put a hand on her shoulder looking the cat woman in the eye, “To be perfectly clear. I. Do. Not. Know. What. I. Am.”
Nyx’s jaw fell open. Was that really possible. The angel herself didn’t know what she was?
Kate continued, “Until recently I just thought of myself as ‘the watcher’ since that’s what I did. Watch over the city. Help heal it, when need be, and just generally keeping an eye on things. It can almost talk you know.”
Nyx wasn’t sure how to take this only managing to force out a simple response, “until… recently?”
“Meeting Atasi changed me, changed everything.” Kate said, “This may seem insane, but it literally never occurred to me to question my existence or job or anything before I met her. I never needed or wanted friends or someone to talk to, or to learn any greater knowledge or anything else. Heck, I didn’t even have a NAME, at least not one that I can remember, before she gave me one. Now though, I more and more find I wish I had the answers to these questions; and more and more I can’t stop thinking about people… especially her. I’m changing and I can’t stop it. I’m… becoming like-” Kate waved at Nyx, “Like one of you.”
“Is that… bad?” Nyx ventured.
“NO!” Kate shouted, then caught herself, “no… its not BAD per se. its… I don’t know and it freaks me out sometimes, so… So you aren’t alone in that way. Not knowing fully what’s happening to you.”
“What?” Nyx asked, “I got a copy of your sword, my own ‘tool’ but I’m still me. Still the same agent”
Kate huffed, “We both know that’s not true, you’ve noticed changes, haven’t you? Stamina, resilience, not to mention you can see me and the demons, right? The beings possessing the people, not just the people themselves. Heck, I wonder if one day you’ll walk into a store, and someone will look right through you like almost everyone looks straight through me.”
“no… no that’s NOT going to happen!” Nyx looked down at her hands, and the gold multitool flowing around under her fur, “I’m not… not…”
“I can feel where souls are, and where they aren’t” Kate said, calmer now, “I can even impose my own soul upon things that lack their own to an extent. Let’s me control machines to a degree, but not people. Their own is in the way, stopping intrusion. I can see theirs though. Most people’s look very similar, vibrant, and lively. The dead differ, confusion and aimlessness, and that’s the ones that haven’t turned vengeful and hate filled.”
“You though? Its closer to a mirror, at least to me.”
Nyx was shaking a little and bit her lip. Was that true? Was her ‘soul’ really becoming a reflection of…” She shook her head, that was insane, it had to be.
“We should probably head back down” Kate said after Nyx hadn’t replied for a while. “I just know that bulldog is going to want me to fully explain myself to the group, so might as well get it over with.”
The pair started to slowly walk to the stairwell, before Nyx piped up, “One more question. You said you had no name before Atasi named you… I’m not sure I caught it.”
“I’m Kate” She said and put on a smile, “Nice to meet you, Nyx.”
Nyx nodded, “Nice to meet you too, and… My name is Cybele.”
