To be honest, "Snivy" doesn't seem so odd now I've known about it for a few days.
This comic was kinda rushed, so the linework standards aren't my best.
There is another comic in the Jaroda/Jalorda vs. Blaziken run to come, but this comic kinda needed to be done as soon as possible.

And a pokenerd fact; most starter pokemon usually have a combination of what sort of animal they are mixed with their given type. Examples are Charmander, which is a mix between char and salamander and so on, the only two starters (that I know of) to ever stray from said tradition is Cyndaquil and Chikorita from generation 2. Given "Smugleafs" japanese name is literally ivysnake, the english name would be more or less the same thing, thus Snivy is born.
It seems like they decided to go for 'shortness' over something a little more classy.
Snivy doesn't really feel like they put a whole lot of thought into it.
Don't get me wrong though, I personally don't have a massive issue with the English names (I just realised you might think I do because of the comic).

pokabu is called floink here (combination of feuer (fire) and oink)
tsutarja is called serpifeu (combination of serpent and efeu (poison ivy))
and mijumaru is called ottaro, which is obviously derived from the word otter^^
i can live with those names very well :3

By the way, I figure it will most likely be pronounced "snai-vee." The people who name the Pokemon probably discovered the Smugleaf name running rampant on the Internet, and decided if they use that they could be sued or something. lol If Snivy is a combination between snide and ivy... snide and smug pretty much mean the same thing. Either they liked the idea Smugleaf is smug or they got the same impression... but leaf and ivy... yeah. Haha.

This comic is observational, it doesn't necessarily reflect my own feelings.
Not that it means anything, but I was watching the show way back when too.
I was also playing the games before they were officially released in my own country... but that doesn't mean anything either.
