Making mashed potatoes is like making a standard omelet, everyone should learn how to do it. So that's why I'm here today to teach you how to make delicious homemade mashed potatoes in my own style, with an accompaniment of some lovely English baked beans because why not!
Ingredients:
- 6-8 white potatoes
- 1/3 cup of butter
- 1/4 cup of milk
- 2 tbsp of mayonnaise
- 1 tsp of minced garlic
- 2 tsp of salt
- 1 can of Heinz British-style baked beans
Recipe:
1. Wash and peel the potatoes, then cut them in half, followed by cutting each half into quarters and each quarter in half.
2. Place the potatoes in your largest pot and add cold water until they're covered.
3. Add 2 tsp of salt and bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat.
4. Once the water is boiling, turn the heat down to medium and cook the potatoes for 20 minutes. Stick a fork in and test the potatoes to see if they've softened enough before moving to the next step. If they're not quite ready, give it about 5-8 minutes more.
5. Drain the boiled potatoes well and leave them in the strainer for a few minutes to air-dry, then move them back to the pot.
6. Use a masher to mash the potatoes until smooth. Be patient and thorough with this step so you don't have too many unmashed potato chunks left in there.
7. Add the butter, milk, mayonnaise and garlic, then stir and fold until combined.
8. Pour the beans into a small pot and heat them up over medium heat, stirring now and then to make sure none of the beans scorch and the sauce stays at the perfect consistency.
9. Divide the potatoes and beans into equal portions for everyone being served, and add whatever condiments are desired to the potatoes--some more salt and/or butter, black pepper, gravy, chopped chives, it's entirely up to you and your fellow diners!
And just like that, you've made some seriously delicious potatoes and beans! Enjoy them as a side dish or, if you just want a small-yet-filling meal, as your main dish!
