They Always Manage to Fall Back Into Old Habits
"Do you remember our first dance, my most plucky and delectable of dears?" Wilford's rich timbre filtered through the small symphony playing in the bandstand. The blue wolfess in the violin chair was sublime in the lilting melody.
"Hard to forget..." Mizu whispered back with a smile as she felt herself being slowly spun, her balance perfect and well-practiced like a ballroom expert.
Had it been days? Had it been years? She didn't feel older.
In fact... she felt young, as when the world was new. Though their playful threats on each other's lives had become a daily ritual, the fact that it not only had not become routine but kept her feeling like living every day as if it were her last gave her a new, zesting lease on life.
"Impossible, in point of fact!" Wilford chuckled, swinging her low, her head passing inches over the floor at a rapid speed. If he didn't hold her precisely right, her head would hit the dance floor with such speed as to at the absolute least, knock her out and at worst, shatter her head like a watermelon.
It was exhilarating.
He spoke up again...
"Then why oh why are you so very, very afraid, Mipu?" He asked, drawing her up close until their bodies were pressed close, nose to nose.
"A-Afraid...?" She squeaked.
"Mmmmmm..... yeeeees. I can see it in your eyes. I can hear it in your voice. I can smell it in your... tail!" Warfstache churred. "So I shall ask of you again, dear Mifu, why are you afraid?"
She hadn't thought of it, at least not consciously.
But now that he'd asked, it was as if a pink-tinted spotlight in her mind's eye had burst into being and she could see the answer with absolute clarity.
"I... I don't want to feel the way I did before I met you. I can't go back to that. I won't. I'll let you blow my brains out before I do. But you can't be with me forever, right...? You... must have other people to see, places to go, things to do. I don't know what I'll do when I don't have this kind of life anymore." She admitted, unable to look away from his eyes.
Her own had become an iridescent mix of blue and pink.
"Why, my beloved Miwu... You needn't be dependent upon little old ME for such things! Goodness glorious greeny galoshing grateful gracious, if THAT has been your takeaway, then I'm a failure of a Wilford Warfstache inDEED!" He exclaimed, then set her into a graceful, spinning twirl that sent her hair and tail swishing behind her like the tails of comets circling a star.
"I-I-I don't understand..." The spinning feline yelped.
He dipped her low suddenly, her eyes spinning as he leaned in close, nose to nose again. "Miqu, have you learned nothing from our time together? The purpose hasn't been to make you a dependent of mine! No no no no ma'am! The purpose has been to show you how to live life to the fullest! You don't have to find a partner to threaten your life, you can go rock climbing, bungie jumping, skydiving! You don't have to be around a patently unwell psychopath... I'm of course not implying that I'm talking about myself in any capacity... in order to travel! My dear Mivu, you were merely existing before. But you're learning to well and truly live."
"I think I understand..." She said, albeit a bit uncertainly.
"Fret thee not, my fine fluffy feline friendo! It'll come to you! But until then... leave worries at the door! They have a sign at this establishment saying as much and Wilford Warfstach may be a primordial force of chaos, a soldier against entropy and an utter... MMMMBASKET CASE... but he shall never ignore rules of that sort!"
And on that dance floor, for the first time in a long time, as he dipped her and her leg lifted, her arm sway and her tail arch, she had the most genuine smile of her life.
Wilford of course, had never stopped.
