These are people who had the choice of dying or allowing sea creatures - symbiotes - to be implanted in their bodies.
The creatures live inside their bodies in an aquarium made of special glass and float a special liquid.
They survive inside at the expense of the host's life force, and the host can live thanks to the symbiote inside it. Naturally, the life of such a person is shortened, but had it not been for this operation, he would have died much earlier from a fatal disease or severe injury.
