I'm back from my short sojourn to tropical climes--and, as promised-- here is the cover to Kyell Gold's long awaited sequel to Out of Position -- Isolation Play. I painted the cover a month or so ago, along with 11 interior illustrations and 5 inked chapter heads.
Starting today they are taking pre-orders for a very limited numbered and signed hard cover edition of the book, which also includes a fancy Firebirds pin. You can check out Kyell's journal for more information on that, or just head straight to Sofawolf Press' website (there's also some previews of the b/w interiors there)!
Book jacket blurb:
Devlin Miski thought coming out on national TV would be the hardest part about being a gay football player. But it's when his press conference is over that the trouble really starts. The athletic tiger and his boyfriend Lee, a fox with a tongue as quick as his wit, still won't get many breaks in their fight for understanding. They'll need to deal with a stubborn reporter determined to get a story any way he can, furious parents, and hostile teammates--not to mention each other.
All's fair in love and war--and this is both.

I guess I'll be able to read the first one someday, when I finally get to move out of this country (the only furry books I was ever able to import here were the first Blacksad album and Kyell's Waterways).
If you haven't done so already, I'd suggest that your read False Dawn, a story that ties in with the first novel.

You guys did an awesome job--I always anticipate excellence, but this cover is really above and beyond. The level of care and detail that went into it is astounding. It's really the perfect cover for the book, and I can't thank you enough for all the hard work you did on this. It was, as always, a great pleasure to work with you, and I look forward to future projects, in between your beautiful comic pages. :)
So amazing! Guess I need to read the first one ASAP to give me an excuse to get this*! :P
* I do really want to read them both... just not sure how to get my paws on them... I'm not exactly "out" on my sexual orientation and explaining away the gay content to nosy family might (read:will) be hard...

I had a feeling this was a continuation to "Out of Position"; just something about the poster in the shop keep window w/the lone fox staring at it as you see the look a like on the poster walking by, paw in paw w/a child kind of made the pieces fall into place. Awesome work as always, really captures the literary work that's it done for
From the title, I thought this was going to be one of those fetishistic stories, like the ones where the person is mummified or something.
Also, "All's fair in love and war--and this is both."
Lolwut? Since when is sports war? Or in this story, are two nations using sports to settle a boarder dispute?:-P

Part of most stadium sports history is fixed in gladiatorial entertainment. Offense and Defense, long term and short term strategy, clear lines are even drawn to show where the two teams are to meet in some sports.
So, in essence, football is strategic war, if on friendly terms and a very small scale.

Well, my brother always jokes that team sports are city-state conflict by proxy.
On the other hand, Elaine Scarry made the point that war is different from every other contest because the results can't be disputed. People that are dead can't be brought back to life, and thus while the results of a different contest can be declared null if the stakes are high enough, the results of a war can't be declared null. However, like you said, football is on friendly terms and a small scale, so declaring the results null isn't usually an issue. It's not like a goverment's going to fall or a city's going to burn if one team wins and another loses (with the possible exception of sports riots, which is an entirely different issue).

The colors & shadows are amazing. I also love the accuracy on bending of the fabric of the clothes.
And while I know that I'm in no position for criticizing such a talented artist as you are, I think that the logo on the kid-tiger shirt looks a little odd, out of place. It exposes itself a little more, as an element, than the rest. But that's just my opinion.

The thing i noticed first was that the tiger cub has exactly the same shade of Lee“s blue eyes, which is a great touch. The accuracy and the details of your drawings is simply breathtaking. Sigh... looking at this picture makes it so much harder to endure the two weeks until my copy gets delivered.
So...I literally just finished the book, and I'm curious what sort of scene you're setting up here. I'm guessing that that's not Dev in the widow, just perhaps a cardboard standup (that's based on the Ultimate Fit sign in front of him)
And then it begs the question...who's the cub? As well as the tiger holding his hand. It can't be a metaphorical version of Dev and Mikhail because Dev's got gold eyes, not blue...and really, I can't imagine Mikhail having a moment of that sort of tenderness with Dev at any age, anyways.
LOL I'm just honestly curious what's going on here. It's a beautiful art piece that compliments an amazing book. You really outdid yourself ^_^

Probably the most realistic atmosphere-drawn picture I have came across. It's just so full of detail, excellent lightning and grand scenery that it's just superb in every right of it's own. I am loving it, and the message behind it just makes it fleshed out all the more. Especially with the clothing, and how the characters all have outstanding features where you can see every hair and design into their outlook. Very well done no doubt, it's just outstanding overall
