“My parents sent a message,” Meredith said, waving her padd at Fuji. “Care to see it?”
“If you don’t mind me snuggling up next to you,” the monitor said with a grin. She matched his smile and moved over so he could sit beside her on their couch, and she sighed happily as one of his paws rubbed her stomach while she accessed her mail.
“Hi, Merry!” Thea said, the mare’s birth mother grinning at the imager. “Hoping you and Fuji are well – “
“Are you well?” Meredith asked her mate.
He made a show of thinking about it. “Yes.”
She nuzzled him. “Good.”
“ – And that you’re pregnancy’s coming along. Berto and Amir have spent a good portion of the day walking around and getting into things. Reminds us of when you were little,” and they could hear Marie and Javid chuckling in the background. “But I’m not sending this to tease you.” She grinned again. “Although that’s a bonus. Varan dropped by earlier.”
Meredith’s ears perked.
“Her ship’s here for repairs,” the older mare said. “If you’re watching the newsnets, the Coreworlders decided to try the Empire again, and got their noses bloodied. Varan came around to talk with us, sort of like she did the last time, and before you ask, yes, she does plan on asking for leave to visit her family and get their help.”
“Good,” Fuji said.
“But it’s very nice of her to think of us, even though we’re not shlani. She also told us that her mother’s gotten married again, and that’s another reason for her to ask for leave. She hasn’t met him yet. Anyway, it was getting late when she got here from their station, and we all agreed she could spend the night in your room.” Thea promptly looked shifty, and placed a finger to her lips as the background moved. She was getting to her hooves, and the imager caught Javid and Marie’s smiling faces as Thea made her way through the house. The palomino mare eased the door open and aimed the imager.
Being much taller than Meredith, Varan couldn’t fit on the mare’s bed. She had solved the problem by pulling the mattress onto the floor and sleeping there. Still in her duty jumpsuit, the vir was curled up and sleeping soundly.
With two infant colts, one draped over her and the other curled up in the coils of her tail, sound asleep with her.
Thea eased the door closed and retreated to the far side of the house, where Merry’s father and co-mother were waiting. All three parents crowded in to face the imager as Marie said, “I’m sure they’ll wake her up eventually. We wanted you to see that, Merry.”
“I hope you and Fuji will come visit us,” Javid chimed in. “I’m sure you’ll get some time off.”
The parents soon signed off, and as Merry lowered the padd she looked at Fuji.
“That was adorable,” the mare said.
Fuji nodded.
They both started laughing.
