One of Kentaro's most powerful techniques, the Gorin KoEnDan is based on the philosophy of Miyamoto Musashi, who wrote the "Book of Five Rings", which was connected to not only the art of the sword, but all martial arts in general. In addition, to first access it, he built it up using a kata exclusive to Miyamoto-ryu Karate: The Gorin Kata. Each of the five short phases of the kata is based one of the Five Animal styles of Kung Fu, and is matched to one of the rings.
The Earth phase is based on Hung Gar, the Tiger style. It builds the foundation of Miyamoto-ryu, and is based on brute strength, representing the tiger's raw power.
The Water phase is based on Snake style. Like water, the snake is a very fluid animal, and helps to put one in balance, which is neccessary in any fighting style.
The Fire phase is based on Leopard style. It is a swift and ferocious phase, similar to a leopard in general. It allows one to know speed and balance it out with the strength of the tiger style.
The Wind phase is based of Fujian White Crane. Fitting, since Karate has origins in this style. It allows the user to control their movement, and allows them to move like the crane.
Lastly, the Void phase, based on Dragon Style. This has an emphasis of allowing one control of their chi. This teaches one to draw in all the negative energy around them, return it to the void, change it to positive, and then turn that energy into their own strength.
Kentaro learned this from his late master, but at first, he had trouble controlling the power released from performing the whole thing. In fact, he performed the kata before dealing the final blow in his battle with Zhang (Zhang was building up a massive amount of power for his own final blow at the time, so Kentaro had enough time to do this). Since then, he's been learning how to perform his Gorin KoEnDan without needing to perform the kata first.
