Many people want to help those in need, especially at this time of year.
One easy way to do this is to set up a food donation box at your place of business (check with your boss first.) We have been doing this it at the clinic for the past 10 years and every year we need a bigger container.
Here is all you need to do: Get a large box. Wrap it in festive paper, color it with pens, draw your fursona on it, whatever. Make an easy to read sign asking people to contribute canned food, dry goods or unwrapped toys. Watch the goodwill grow as the mound of items in the box does. When the box is full, take it the local soup kitchen, food bank, firestation, or whatever entity you want to support. Place the empty box back its spot and start over.
You will feel great, you will make a difference in people's lives and give us furries a good name all at once. What could be better?
If you are unable to do this at work, then take a few minutes and raid
your own pantry. That can of refried beans left over from your superbowl
party? Donate. That box of angel hair pasta that your mom left behind?
Give it away. That science experiment in the back of the fridge?
Ummm, better leave that right where it is...
Ask your friends to do the same at their dens. Collect up a box of food and
drive it over to the food bank. Every town has one. It'll take you 10 minutes.
Do it. It's easy. Your kind gesture will make a difference in the lives
of many. You will feel great. Trust me, the emotional boost you will get
from a simple act of kindness will last and last.
Thanks to everyone for reading and happy howlidays.

Another great way is to just make things visible...I send out an e-mail to my organization every year explaining local places they can go to donate. Also, when my mate and I get married we are going to have it in a local park and allow the local shelter to have a binder next to the guest book showing what animals are up for adoption/fostering.
So many ways to help!

Such a good idea.
If you keep an eye out, many local post offices even have a program where they will pick up cans of food from your mail box for local food drives. They usually leave a note in your mail box a few days before hand.
This would also be a great thing to do at a weekly fur meet. Everyone brings something and someone volunteers to drop it off. :)

And you can always find food that you just don't need in your pantry that others would find a true blessing. I did the same thing with a number of books when I moved homes this year. People often don't realize that libraries will always be happy to take in your old books so that everyone can use them :)
You're saying that I can keep my radio-active clam in a jar? lol
On to more important matters....here on base, we do this for people that are actually leaving/coming to Cuba. Actually, we donate toys and such for kids that are either moving or coming to live on base.
However, at my work, we're doing the same thing you're doing, DB. But for us, it's for the stray cats that we have in our clinic. We ask for donations for toys, food and cat litter.
And before you ask why the Army isn't paying for this, it's because stray cats don't count as something important for our job. So, we the staff have to get all the cat stuff with money from our pockets. But surprisingly enough get lots of donations. Which makes the cats and us both very happy. Not to mention that every so often, someone actually adopts a cat. Which is even better!

Thanks for doing the awesome stuff that you do.
Of course, you are correct, animals need our love
at this time of year and all year round.
Working in veterinary hospital we sometimes loose contact
with the human need so this is our way of making up for that
disparity. Thank you for helping in all ways.
And yes, that clam with the odd yellow glow is yours to keep...

My high school hosts an annual food drive. All of the clubs get involved and it's a really big deal! :)
Last year we were able to donate over 40,000 cans of food to the local salvation army -- one of the largest collections on the east coast!
But every little bit counts. In fact, if everyone donated a single can, ONE single can, we could feed thousands.
It all makes a difference! Thanks for informing everyone, dogbomb! :D

You don't have to limit yourself to the holiday season, you know. Heck, I make it a semi-tradition to get rid of old clothing I don't wear anymore every 6 months. Donate 'em to the local thrift stores and such.
But this is helpful too. You have no idea how much food ma stores. The pantry's packed with cans.

I usually donate some canned food every year. Last year I went to see a concert of Passion Pit and they asked to bring some. I usually never expect anything back, but I got a free copy of their latest CD for donating food. It gives you a feeling you did something good, for me thats more than enough. The Free CD could be a bonus. ^^
There are a lot of great organizations out there and these charities need more support than ever with the increased demand since the recession began. I always try to donate to at least one group. Donating can be easier than people think, especially if they have any unopened toys they are not using or unopened, non-expired food they are not eating. Plus for groups like Toys for Tots, you can buy products when they are on sale like after Xmas and save them up for the following year.
Thanks for reminding everyone of the holiday spirit of giving.
No need to reply.

As a child, my family actually had to depend on things such as goodwill and the salvation army. Charities actually do wonders for people in need, I wouldn't be the person I am today without them. I make it a point to at least buy some canned food at the dollar store and toss it into the nearest donation box. Keep in mind that the better someone's quality of life is, the more likely they are to be happy. I have experienced going to bed hungry and watching my parents become depressed because they can't put food on the table. Donate at least one can of food or piece of clothing when ever you can, and you can help relieve someone's stress.
Dogbomb, I wish I could buy you a beer for putting this idea out there. *Highfives*

*waggwaggwagg* It is very good of you to mention this DB! You are a good dog! Very very good dog!! We have one of these where I work, I brought in some canned goods and a few boxes of human marflebits for it. I know what it's like to need the food bank to get by; When I first moved out on my own I had to do some creative things to get food for the first year or so. I also like to take a bag or 2 of dogfood to the local shelter. I'll be doing that next week when I get paid. I hope you and your pups have a fantastic holiday! *hugs*
