I could explain in detail why I didn't think Lightyear was particularly impressive, but I don't really need to, the point I would make that I think best exemplifies why the cartoon was better (despite the fact that I went into the movie with the specific intention not to compare them, as it wouldn't be fair to judge it for what it isn't instead of what it is, only for the plot to be more or less the same as the pilot movie and with every main character having an analogue in the show, it was basically begging me to compare them) is that the characters and designs in the cartoon are so unique and memorable that nameless background characters make a big enough impression to justify drawing fanart of them, whereas I can't even remember the names of most of the main characters in the movie, they did so little for me, and those were characters that actually had names.

the movie wasn't really a bad movie, it was bad as a Buzz Lightyear movie, having them talk about space rangers and star command, but having 1.) no intelligent aliens and 2.) a universe with relativistic ftl, kinda undermines the whole idea of a galactic organization. If it takes a space ranger 10 years to respond to a call for help, then there's really no point to the organization, is there?
