First of all, let me establish my standpoint in this creative decision: I used to enjoy Sonic the Hedgehog as a kid growing up in the 1990's, but I liked him more as a fictional character rather than a video game mascot. I used to watch the two Sonic cartoons on TV and collected about a year's worth of the original Sonic Archie comics. I just found Sonic to be much more interesting than Mario in terms of narrative quality and diverse characterizations without resorting to bland tropes (which unfortunately the Super Mario Brothers franchise had resorted to. At least that that time.)

Now after learning about how successful the two recent Sonic movies have been, and thusly watching them both, I've gained a renewed appreciation for the character of Sonic. He's not just another dispensable video game mascot like Mario has been over the years, he's a modern day "Felix the Cat" in which he thinks he's above human consequence, but he's not, and yet he accepts them and overcomes them just like you and me. And this realistic factor is applied in the moral theme of the two movies, making them suiting for families to watch.
