This just happened - no sooner had I opened this image and showed it to Gloria, our Raccoon family came calling.
There is a mama, and two kits. The kits are near as big as her now. (the back of our house faces a forest) The mama's name is Jumpy (for how she climbs the fence) and then the kits are Blackie, and Baby.
They are not pets. We simply have a hand/paw shake friendship.
Animals do communicate. Jumpy will stick her head through the fence and stare at the house. When I see her, I'll open the door and tell her I'll be right out. We have three feeders, and I'll load them up. This morning, Baby came out and was tugging on my pants leg. Their favorite foods are peanuts (whole and unsalted) and cheetos. I've tried other foods for them, but cheetos are the absolutely preferred item.

I've only had one raccoon encounter so far (they're an invasive species in Germany, there are some raccoon hotspots but not where I live); it was a quick shadow at night that crossed the street, a masked shadow whose light-refldcting eyes were directed at me for a second. After all one would think it wasn't that special at all but it left quite an impression on me.
