For a while now, Vyers knew that if he didn't get any donations soon, he'd have to close the shops.
Vyer's Wonderous Beast Emporeum was losing business for the greater half of a year, mostly due to refusal to
pay the Hunter Guild's outrageous prices for capture of beasts.
The small homey store was placed in the back side of Stone City, a bussiling metropolis in the heart of the
Dark Forest, so any animals that came into the store were terrible pets, mostly Shryke chicks, feral wolves,
and serpents.
The Viaspa merchant sighed as he leaned down against the counter as he gazed around at the empty shelves,
cages, and general space. Hard to believe that things were going so well for the last three years since he
retired from the adventuring life.
He pushed himself up from the counter and leaned agains the dusty wall behind him, head raised to the cieling
in thought. Sure, this was good, but maybe her could get back into the adventuring life, it was only...what?
three years since he even considered raising a sword. Then again, begging wasn't as life threatening, and with
time...
A ring at the door stopped the half elf in thought, his slightly pointed ears perked with the sound. He looked
to the door, staring at it with surprise. There was no way anyone would be here, not now. He couldn't see any
shadows due to the street being blackened by the larger buildings blocking the sun.
A knock joined the second ring, and he pushed himself off the wall. Could it be? He smiled brightly as he
walked around the counter and stepped invigorated to the door. With a flourish he opened it.
"Hello! How may I-" Vyers stopped as he realized nobody was there.
He looked to his left, then to his right, then to his left again, seeing nothing but the other buildings across
the empty street. He drooped, irritated now at whatever miscreant decided to prank him this time. With a gruff
sound he started to close the door.
Just as his head turned to the inside of the shop, he heard a sound. The sound was light, almost like a
kitten's meow, but chimed like an ethereal creature. He turned around again, seeing nothing, and then he looked
down.
By his foot was a glass case that seemed to hold something that glowed. He lifted the box and examined the
contents inside. If he wasn't thinking he was dreaming, he would have assumed it was some kind of phylactry.
On top of the case was a note, and he took it into one hand as he hefted the case into the crutch of his other
arm. He walked into the store again and set the case down onto the counter. He looked at the note then with
great curiosity. Phylactrys were never held by just anyone, and whoever had it knew to keep it in a glass
container, so they must've been either a mage or someone who knew a lot about the arcane. He should be careful
with the note...
Snapping his fingers, he ran to his closet, pulling out a pair of lycan-leather gloves. As he put them on he
felt a great sense of nostalgia, remembering the lycanlord that he killed to get the gloves made back in the
glory days. Lycans were known to be very magically resistant, and gloves made from their leathered hide would
be perfect for handling magical objects; he couldn't get all the times that he owed his life to these gloves
out of his head.
With great care, the merchant peeled away the slip that held the note together. As he opened the paper, he read
the well written words that seemd to have been made with a deep crimson ink.
"Dear Mr. Vyers Granam of the Vyer's Wonderous Beast Emporium,
What is left upon your doorstep is a group of magically contained creatures that have fallen into my
posession recently. I cannot care for any creatures at this time due to very current, even more so dangerous
complexities in my life.
I have decided to leave them with you, for I know in my heart that they will help you in spirit as well as
business, and will find their ways into good, caring, loving homes with your assistance.
Do not fret, Mr. Granam, for your life is not in danger. These are kindly spirits who have been contained for
their safety in this world. Now in your protection, the phylactry that they were placed in is no longer
necesary.
I will return to inspect progress of their adoptions some time in the near future, and I will pay you
handsomely for each one that has been taken in. My reasons are my own.
Wishing you well and best of luck to you!
Great sincerities,
~V"
Well, Vyers thought as he finished the note, this is odd. There weren't many people who knew of the Granams of
Newquest, the human side of his family that he lived with after the death of his mother at a young age in his
life. He wondered who this "V" could be, and then folded the note up and put it into a drawer in the back of
the counter. Now with curiosity of what could be inside the phylactry, Vyers pulled off his gloves and unlocked
the case, lifting the glass cover free of it's spot over the smaller, magical container.
The Phylactry looked like a solid potionglass that glowed a soft blue-green, with dust like emissions that
sparkled off it's wholeness. He knew it wasn't dangerous just by looking at it, malevilant magic was trully
hard to hide, even to his weaker than normal elve's senses.
He gently touched the phylactry, feeling the chill of the glass object right before it shattered to his
fignertip making contact to it. Shattering is a poor word, more or less like it melted away into light. The
small star shone brilliantly, and it exploded out around him into numerous smaller stars. One in front of him
spun around his waist, passed his face, and landed on the counter.
It shone brilliantly, making him cover his face with his arm, and then he heard the chiming meow-like sound
again.
He opened his eyes, and glanced to the counter.
Sitting on the counter was a creature no higher than his knee, mamallian in appearance with a long body of cyan
fur, a long snout, big eyes of deep purple and a single gem of ruby red on it's forehead. It's bushy tail
swished around behind it and it leveled itself onto it's large back feet, it's small paws in front of it, and
it looked directly at him.
As he stared in wonder, the small furry thing smiled and chimed at him, almost like a bark.
"By the gods!" Vyers said with wonder, lifting the creature up with his arms. "It's a Novispa!"
Novispa were highly magical, wonderous creatures that made high elves envy their power. Like unicorns, they
were covetted by Lordly courts and spellcasting masters. Creatures of the Kosmos, they were known to appear
around people of trully good souls, attracted by the friendly auras that came off such people.
He looked around just as the Novispa flew out of his hands, propelled by magic than by any wings, and the other
stars spun around and landed, blinding him for a few moments.
When he regained his vision, he saw that his store was littered with the little wonders.
He smiled with his mouth dropped, watching the Novispas of many shapes and sizes run around and examine their
new temp homes.
He walked around the counter and leaned against it, lost for words at the astounding sight. It was said to
bring ten years of good luck to see a Novispa, and there were so many around him...
He felt weight press against his chest, and he brought his hands up to hold onto a smaller Novispa, a horn
scraping his chest gently, the tip too dull to penetrate his flesh. Big gem-like eyes looked up at him.
"Are you our new papa?" it said with a voice that echoed with pure magic.
He felt the soft fur on his fingertips as he held the creature close to his chest, and he smiled warmly,
feeling his heart touched at the words. He knew that Novispas were known to speak, and his shock went with the
initial entrance of the critters. "For now...yes, little ones."
"Will we be taken to other papas and mamas?"
"I hope so." the half elf laughed, thinking that it was hard to keep hold of Novispas, especially since
adventurers would be willing to pay small fortunes that could by them a castle for one of these.
He set the Novispa down, and looked around. "I'm Vyers, and I am the owner of this shop. Since your all living
with me for a time, I hope you enjoy your stay!"
The Novispas all chimed in, and some came up to him, rubbing and purring all around him.
After a short time of introductions, Vyers ran into his closet and pulled out some papers. It took him most of
the evening to write the same message onto all the papers, and some of the Novispa decided to help him in the
later night.
Walking outside long after the torchlights were lit, he ran down the street towards the center of town. All
around the city fountain and down the main street that led to the Crimson Fortress, he set up the signs that
said the same thing:
"Vyer's Wonderous Beast Emporium
Is Proud to Announce Their newest Collection of Enchanted Wonder!
For a Limited time, A stock of fine Novispa are up for Adoption!
All in good health and looking for good homes,
Come on down and pick one up today!"
With a nod of satisfaction, he walked back to the house, where after a cheerful return, he walked up to his bed
and fell to sleep.
With happy dreams, most likely caused by the pressence of the Novispa, he knew things were going to get better
around here.
