He did live a long, full life though, and worked pretty much right up until the end. I loved this one commercial he made for Holland xD

Just heard about it on the news myself.. from Pneumonia (DAMN.. that illness -- which I had myself at 24 from Chicken Pox -- is a scourge of the elderly).
I remember Forbidden Planet too (CLASSIC SciFi).
But, I think he'll be remembered for his comedy more than anything.. especially Airplane and Police Squad.
In playing Commander John J. Adams in Forbidden Planet (with Walter Pigeon and Ann Francis) as he confronts Morbius about his ID manifesting into physical form:
Morbius: Alta, go into my study.
Commander Adams [Nielson]: You still refuse to face the truth.
Morbius: What truth?
Adams: Morbius, that thing out there - it's you.
Or from the classic, Airplane, where Nielson played Dr. Rumack speaking to Ted Striker:
Rumack: Well, I don't have anything to say, you've done the best you could. You really have, the best you could. You can't expect to win em all. But, I want to tell you something I've kept to myself through these years. I was in the war myself, medical corps. I was on late duty one night when they brought in a badly wounded pilot from one of the raids. He could barely talk. He looked at me and said, "The odds were against us up there, but we went in anyway, I'm glad the Captain made the right decision." The pilot's name was George Zip.
Ted Striker: George Zip said that?
Rumack: The last thing he said to me, "Doc," he said, "some time when the crew is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to get out there and give it all they got and win just one for the Zipper. I don't know where I'll be then, Doc," he said, "but I won't smell too good, that's for sure."
RIP Leslie. We're gonna miss you a bunch.. and I'm not joking... Shirley!

I had been watching "Forbidden Planet" today when I opened up Yahoo and saw the news. So sad; I always had hopes of meeting him someday.
I think Forbidden Planet is my favorite of his films; Captain J. J. Adams, the model for Captains Pike and Kirk and definitely a fine officer. The way he delivers the last line and coda of the film... I always get chills.

Well, Farewell, Mr. Nelson!
He lived 84 years of entertaining people from plays to movies, comedy to sci-fi. He was a great comedy and character actor. Will miss him, but never forget him!
Seems like all the actors that I had grown up and enjoyed to watch are almost all gone!

A little shocked when I heard about it on the news yesterday. I hadn't realized he was quite /that/ old. I remember him in his major roles when I was younger as well, much like everyone else. Always the so called 'funny man'. I guess I'm a little different. I saw his acting in an episode of Due South. He played a bit of a more serious role while in an RCMP uniform as that character. I found it rather refreshing. I'm sure the material he created will last for generations now that he has moved on along with the other great actors we had lost. Hats off to you, Mr. Nielson.
I just saw a collection of his interviews, where he brought along a whoopee cushion.

While its sad that he's passed, at least he wont have to see the remake of Forbidden Planet...
So sick of those classic movies being remade.
Oh well... Oh, watch out the next time you see hailstones the size of golfballs. That isnt hail, he's just still playing.
<points up at a cloud, whereupon you hear a soft echoy "whoops! Yeah, thats a lowwie.. heres five bucks">
[Points to anyone that gets that last bit ;) ]

Amen. Airplane was one of the original shows I saw him in, then in a TV show like Naked gun, then of course the naked guns, spy hard.... etc. I have to say he was an icon of great perportions. I believe the last thing I heard about him doing was the hokey movie with the Hanson brothers... I have not checked the IMDB.
