this is a misconception the idea of the losing team being sacrificed is not common and only happened for ritual games that where played every few decades more often than not they were just regular games. however the ball was made of solid rubber and could pick up quite a bit of speed and wasn't too uncommon for injuries to occur or deaths to happen from getting hit in a vital area.
