I use Cernit polymer clay. I prefer it to be not too fresh and not too old. Then it has the best characteristics in my opinion.
I also used to squish the details or break the pre-bakes. It sometimes happens today as well, but muuuch less frequently now. Perhaps for me it just became a matter of practice - to hold the sculpture in such a way as to avoid accidental damage (although this may hurt the arm sometimes if to hold it for too long).
