Meredith’s parents had all had a good laugh at the sight of their infant sons using Varan as a pillow, and after a few moments the vir had seen the humor in it as well. At least neither of the little colts had urinated on her in the night; she hadn’t brought a change of clothes.
It also pleased her that Javamir and Javiberto had felt so comfortable around her, and she with them, that the various scents hadn’t bothered any of them.
After thanking Javid, Marie and Thea for their hospitality and kindness, Varan went to the spaceport. While the shuttle headed up to the dockyard, the vir tipped her head back and thought about her activities for the day.
The first thing she should do would be to bathe, she decided, followed by firstmeal and checking on the progress of the repairs to her ship. With her priorities set, the vir went to her temporary quarters.
No one had seemed to notice the scents on her clothes and fur.
By the time her shower was finished she felt ravenous, but bathing had been her first priority. An officer had to maintain a military bearing. Some bread, fruit and meat would satisfy the second item on her list, combined with reading from her padd as she ate.
Repairs to the Bōank were proceeding without incident, and a few personnel from the three cruisers that hadn’t made it through the battle in a reparable condition were requesting permanent transfer to her ship. She flicked her tail at one rating’s explanation that he considered Bōank to be a “lucky” ship.
She resisted the urge to contact him and argue the point, but instead forwarded it to the personnel section. Varan sat back, sipping at a glass of fruit juice as she studied each message and report, sending responses or suggestions as necessary.
That left personal messages, and she was pleased to see that she had approval for some home leave. Very good; she wanted to meet her mother’s new mate.
Finally there was the game module from Meredith, and she reserved some time in a simulator to play after she completed her work.

Despite the very messy way they’d had to retrieve the third part of the Amulet, it had been worth it. Varan’s mage character’s mana reserves were far higher than they had been before they had entered the Grotto of Desire, and the previously locked parts of her spellbook were now accessible.
She took for granted that she would definitely need those spells.
Meredith’s new blessed armor and weapons granted her extra protection from attacks on her purity, as well as the ability to fend off mind control spells. Again, both the paladin and the mage were certain that the new abilities would be used as the final battle on this final level drew near.
After settling into a room at an inn a days’ travel from Ottokar City, the mage and the paladin set out the three parts of the Amulet.
The likenesses of the bear, mink, and dog quivered slightly and drew together, the short links of chain meeting and connecting together. There was a brief glow as the Amulet became whole again.
Varan picked it up, weighing it in her hand. “Surprisingly light, considering it’s gold.” The mage lifted it up and placed it on her head as Meredith watched, ready to intervene.
Standing outside the projection, Varan watched in shock as her simulacrum’s features softened, becoming vapid; her intelligence and wisdom stats plunged into negative values, and her feline pupils dilated to almost full circles.
She looked at her paladin companion and squealed, “HIIIIII! You’re PRETTY!”
The golden palomino mare flinched backward for a moment before lunging at the mage and snatching the Amulet from her. This caused Varan to fall to the floor, twitching as her stats rebounded.
“Good grief,” Meredith said, tossing the Amulet onto a nearby bed. “Varan, are you all right?”
The mage sat up, holding her head as she replied, “Yes, I think so. That’s an amazing level of stupid, but it’s supposed to be used in conjunction with the Kurwood Derby.” She removed the hat from her inventory and placed the Amulet on the Derby like a hatband. “Aka, the Derby, being a cursed item, tried to take you over.”
Meredith nodded. “It can turn the wearer into an Overbearing Know-It-All. I’m glad you were there to help me.”
Varan smiled and picked the embellished hat up. “Ready?” Meredith nodded, and the vir placed it on her own head.
She blinked. “Varan?” the mare asked.
“I think – I think the Amulet’s working,” Varan replied. Her tail looped up and adjusted the hat, and she asked, “Where – aka. The Ghost Mountain is located fifteen leagues north-northeast of here.”
Meredith grinned. It had been a while since the Vampire Lord Bob had given them the tip, and now they knew how far away their next goal was.
Varan removed the now-harmless Derby and placed it in her satchel, and the two adventurers settled down for the night.
