Filling in some lore for my universe I hope to make into stories: Null Crystals! An inverse to the metal used in Quill's sword, these are crystals that siphon mana from the surrounding area, with small pieces used in binds used to keep spellcasters powerless when either imprisoned or if they are out on parole.
The gray wolf pictured there isn't a criminal so he's grumpy he has to be used as a demonstration to show the effects of the crystals. His name is Dave.
