The crystals drain mana and disperse it into the world around them, draining users of their powers. Despite this, they do have a capacity of how much mana they can hold at one time. Because of this, it's possible to overload Null Crystals to cause them to shatter, violently releasing the energy stored inside them. Because of the volatile nature of an overloaded gem, attempts to break out are not common at all, though mages with substantial skill or power can either cast a reinforced mana shield in the brief moments the crystal is cracking but not yet shattered from the flood of magic, or control their output enough to merely crack the crystal without causing an explosion of pure energy, or whatever spell it had been overcharged with.
