The chamberlain looked at the pointy green ears and dark purple hair poking above his desktop and cleared his throat awkwardly.
"Well. There are some compilations of harvest reports on that shelf if you need- Ah, just so." There was a thump of a great deal of paper on wood and with that boost a mature green face appeared over the desk, giving the chamberlain a face to put to the name on the application in front of him.
"Now, Miss Gabriela...?" The Chamberlain paused for there was some information missing from the form.
"Mrs," the applicant said. "Mrs Gabriela."
"Mrs Gabriela what? What is your family name? Or marital name?" the old bird asked.
"Just Mrs Gabriela," she replied. "I've survived several misters and am between names at the moment."
It was unusual but nothing in the hiring process said an applicant had to have a last name. It just looked untidy to leave a portion of the form blank so he wrote in "N/A" where it had a line for last name.
"Now Mrs Gabriela N slash A, oh my mistake... Mrs Gabriela, for your species you put down Lesser Dunian Burrowing Rabbit...? I don't believe I've heard of such a thing."
"Yessir. Entirely real, sir. That's why I have such big ears, clearly. And the green coloration is underground pigmentation." Gabriela explained this with an entirely serious expression, not a quirk of lip or twitch of eye to betray it as a lie. Although a lie it was. It was the lie she'd maintained for decades, outrageously so, in the era of ready access to information. "Often informally known as the goblin rabbit," she added, covering for the possibility she'd slip up and call herself a goblin at some later point.
The chamberlain pondered Mrs Gabriela's complete lack of fur, the unrabbitlike shape of her ears, and a myriad of other things. He tutted and muttered to himself, adding notes to the margin of her job application.
He asked her some questions about the job responsibilities and confirmed that she, in fact, did do windows.
It was a formality. By the time she was interviewing with him, she'd gone through other rounds of interviews with people lower in the hierarchy. They would have gone over everything thoroughly.
They should have gone over everything thoroughly. And yet the form was hastily filled out.
"Mr Max was quite taken with you," the chamberlain remarked, reading over the comments. "He says you demonstrated your polishing technique for him?"
Gabriela's face broke from her serious expression and she hid a giggle behind a hand. When she emerged, she was a serious applicant again. "Yes, sir. He seemed well pleased with my technique. He couldn't stop gushing."
The old bird paused. Then made a note on the form.
"What is your reason for wanting to be a maid in Queen Jasiri's castle?" he asked. It wasn't a question on the form but it was one he liked to ask.
"Oh, I've felt the calling to work in the queen's castle as long as I've been on this world!" Gabriela said. This was true. When Razor Tongue sent and/or banished Gabriela to this world, she'd commanded her to infiltrate the court of the country's queen.
But the young succubus princess didn't really sweat the details or knowing things before saying things.
Dunia hadn't had a queen as primary ruler in quite some time prior to Gabriela's arrival. So Gabriela was pretty free to do as she pleased in Dunia, moving from place to place and finding a husband or two. But once Jasiri succeeded her husband on the throne, Gabriela had felt an irresistible compulsion to fulfill that old command. She had taken an oath of undying loyalty to Lord Silver Tongue, an oath that he had transferred to his daughter.
The chamberlain frowned. "Dunia has not had a queen as primary ruler in quite some time before her majesty, Queen Jasiri."
"And that's why I've never applied before now," said Gabriela, telling the truth in a way where the truth came off as a little jest.
The chamberlain again marked notes on the form.
"The pay is also an attractive benefit," Gabriela said.
The chamberlain nodded to himself. He had made sure that the maids were well-paid, considering what they had to put up with in the castle.
"You are a strange applicant," said the chamberlain frankly. "But I see no reason not to hire you. I'll call someone to orientate you."
--
Gabriela wobbled. And jiggled. And moved in all kinds of enticing ways.
The maid uniform did not cover much of her. Or support much of her.
"Ahem. I do apologize, Mrs Gabriela," said the maid handling her orientation. "We don't have many uniforms in stock for someone of your stature and, erm, other stature." The first stature was accompanied by a hand held about Gabriela's height. For the second stature, the maid made a curving motion in front of her much more restrained bosom.
"This is fine," said Gabriela. The skirt barely covered her butt and it seemed gravity must at any moment notice her top. But she was comfortable dressed precariously like that.
There was one thing that warranted questioning though.
"Don't these uniforms come with shoes?" Gabriela asked.
"Why, yes!" the maid exclaimed. "Well, normally. We don't keep rabbit maid shoes in stock because that's so much shoe. And Mr. the chamberlain said you were a Lesser Dunian Burrowing Rabbit?"
"Often informally known as the goblin rabbit," Gabriela said, feeling defeated.
"So if you want shoes, you'll have to order them yourself!" The maid never looked down at Gabriela's feet to see whether or not she had large rabbit paws and Gabriela didn't bother to poke holes in her own deception.
Gabriela wondered why had she picked a rabbit for the ears all those years ago. She could have been the Lesser Dunian Burrowing Fennec! They had big ears too but widdle paws so she could have gotten shoes.
Hell if she was going to pay out of pocket for them though.

Given that Gabriela is a castle maid, I wanted to get her a picture of her in a maid uniform, based on the one Rachael is wearing here.
And I had fun imagining Gabriela applying for a job at the castle while the chamberlain is just thinking 'something is clearly up here but also she does windows so lets just see how it goes.'
