I wouldn't say 'terrible' :P though I'm not sure how pixelated you wanted to get, I mean, you can see it's pixelated but I don't know if you were going for a in-your-face snes type of pixelation!

I was, its only 200 pixels high, its meant to look a bit like a retro game sprite

Pretty awesome considering you're new to it ^^
Only advice I can give you to improve is to play about with dithering to get some of the colours to blend more

There's a website that I use to learn how to make different effects, it's something like the 'sonic spriters network' or something =/
I know you're not doing sonic sprites, but it just helps ^w^
