Almost ten years had passed since Hilda slowly and without explaination had been transformed into a deer-fox. As Hilda and Twig grew older and larger Johanna, Hilda's mother, realized that they would need to move out of Trollberg, into the wilderness again. Town life was no life for two growing Deer-foxes. Hilda and Twig spent less and less time in Johanna's cabin as the years passed. Nowadays they only visited Johanna once or twice every month or so. The rest of the time they lived in the forests and mountiains.
An explaination or a cure for the transformation had never been found, except that it was probably magical in nature. Other children, and a couple of adults, had suffered the same or similar fates over the years. Those who had transformed and had been discovered were given special ID necklaces to make sure no one would confuse them with ordinary animals. Hilda and Twig joined a Deer-fox herd together. Some of its members were former humans, their necklaces and slightly different mannerism compared to other deer-foxes made their origin obvious to everyone. Hilda sometimes "spoke" to them, not with words but by making eye contact and using body language.
Hilda had long ago accepted that she would remain a deer-fox for the rest of her life. The life a deer-fox did fit her fairly well so she wasn't that sad about it. She watched as the other deer-foxes of the herd paired up and started families. Hilda wasn't sure if that was something she wanted as well in the future. But right now she was satisfied with babysitting and playing with the cubs.
