Chapter 2 - Getting Settled In
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
Flopsy makes a friend! It's good, a friend is going to go a long way to being able to survive in a place like this. She's still not sold on this "Magic doesn't exist here" thing, especially in a city of endless wonders like this one. Ben, meanwhile, is still trying to figure out his strange guest. Sure, he could have chosen not to help so much, but... When would he ever get a chance to find out more about her, if he let her leave? Either way, a lot of introducing each other to new ideas. Flopsy even gets her first "phone"!
---
While it takes place in the same Earth/Terra setting as Princess, these are probably different... timelines? I haven't fully decided if events in one will happen in the other, or if there will be any sort of crossover possibilities. I don't plan for it to be required to read Princess to understand what's going on here, either. Of course, not everything will make sense right away, especially to poor Flopsy. As always, I welcome comments and questions, and will do my best to answer without giving spoilers. ^_^
(What's it take to get Hoofbun added to the species list? Just gotta get a lot of people willing to make their own, I suppose?)

I have a few hoofbun pics posted, but the most "canon" version is the one by Shiro, shown here. Only two legs. ^_^
Again, well written, though one nitpick I have, if you'll allow it, is how casually Ben reacted to Flopsy. He just encountered an alien! A talking rabbit with hooves! Some shock and confusion, perhaps him questioning his own sanity would have added an interesting dynamic here. Anyway, I'll continue reading.
His real-life counterpart is surprisingly pragmatic and laid back. While it might be a little unrealistic, there's still some freaking out, especially over the more weird parts that come up. But he's more the "Let me dissect this so I can understand it" type than the "Let me freak out about how impossible this is even though it's clearly happening right in front of me". ...But yeah, I might've been able to do a better job with that. ^_^;;
Ben is a good bean. ^_^ His mental process was pretty much, "Well, this is a thing that's happening. There's no point in trying to say it's not, I can clearly see it happening. And she's able to talk, and was crying, so she definitely feels emotions, including sadness. And sadness is unpleasant, so I want to try to alleviate that." And after that, it's been kind of stuck on "This is my life now... I can't throw her out when there's so much she doesn't understand, she'll get into trouble!"
I am kind of confused how Flopsy thinks she can't use magic, despite having a magic collar that as far as i can tell uses her own magic to power its functions. Does she think it has some internal power source and the tiring effect from having the human disguise on comes from something else? Or is it in the sense that she can't create spells herself, but still provide energy to a spell integrated into an item?
Just remembered that from what i remember magic energy on Terra comes from the soul, so without a soul she can't produce that energy and any magic storage integrated into the collar would run out eventually. Though i guess it possible for her to not know why beings without a soul can't use magic, so her being able to use the collar like that might not appear contradictory to her.
To the best of her (limited) knowledge, this is what she believes at this point:
* Living beings have a soul. It's sparked from other souls, it can't be created or destroyed, and magic can't change it. It simply IS.
* Souls are the source of magical power. They generate power, which is used in both shaping spells and powering items.
* She is the only "living" thing to ever have existed without a (true) soul. She's the first of her kind, as a Living Construct.
* She has something LIKE a soul, but not. A "self-sustaining flame" created by imbuing her with an insane amount of energy to the point where it's its own reaction. Like igniting a flame, as long as it has fuel in the form of food and drink, she'll produce energy.
* Her Not-Soul does not allow her to actually use runes herself or shape spells, only power items that were imbued by others, as well as her own enhancements (and her body basically counts as another "magical item").
It's not... completely consistent, no. Especially this "I have a Soul That Isn't A Soul that conveniently lets me do all the stuff I want to do/can do but doesn't let me do all the stuff I have a mental block against or can't do." business. But actually finding answers to that is... gonna be a challenge. ^_~
